We Could Not Do What We Do,

Without All of You

April marks National Volunteer Month with a special week from April 16th- 22nd dedicated to showing appreciation for all the hours and passion volunteers bring to an organization. As many of you know, The Baltimore Station was started by volunteers looking to make a difference in their Federal Hill community. They passed out blankets, sandwiches, and a friendly smile to those in need just doing their best to brighten the lives of those struggling with homelessness.

Now, 34 years later, we continue that work to help those looking for a safe space to grow and work through a recovery treatment program. But we could not do the work we do without our dedicated force of volunteers backing us up every step of the way. From monthly meal services to weekly health lessons, event help on a day off and everything in between; our volunteers are one of the reasons we can turn lives around. So, a round of applause, a standing ovation, and a huge thank you to each and every one of our volunteers! We truly couldn’t do it without you.

If you are in the area, be sure to stop by and check out our Thank You banner proudly hanging at our South Baltimore Station. If you are interested in volunteering this spring and summer, we are happy to schedule you for a group or individual opportunity, just reach out to lfrazier@baltimorestation.org.

Take a Swing for Recovery

Did you Take a Swing for Recovery this month? If you didn’t, you certainly missed out on our newest (and possibly most active) way to give back to The Baltimore Station. We hosted our first ever TopGolf tournament at the brand new TopGolf Baltimore Facility, with all funds raised going back to the men we serve here at The Baltimore Station. There was food, fun, raffles, and of course some friendly competition. And as guests departed, we passed out blessing bags so everyone could leave with a reminder to give back to those in the community who need our help.

In the end, we raised over $69,000 to continue our work serving veterans and others in need! A huge thank you to our presenting sponsor BlueHalo, WMAR for their media partnership, the volunteers for their time, our Friends of The Station, and all other sponsors who we couldn’t have done this event without. And a special thank you to all of those who came out to show their support through attendance, we absolutely love sharing our mission with the community, especially at fun-filled occasions like these.  Congratulations to our tournament winners: Best Team: Jiffy Lube; Best Player: Casey Casella and Participation award: The Terps

If you missed this one, be sure to check out more events we have coming up at the bottom of the newsletter.

Join The Patriots! A New Way to Connect to The Baltimore Station

This month we rolled out our new monthly giving program called The Patriots. This community of Patriots helps provide a source of reliable financial support throughout the year. Financial support helps cover the cost of food, treatment, counseling sessions, etc. It is a way for supporters to spread out their giving over time and have a more active role in our mission of turning lives around.

By setting up a monthly donation, donors only need to enter their information once and not have to worry about filling out a form each time they would like to donate. It is an easy subscription that can be canceled at any time and an easy way to help make a difference in the lives of the veterans we serve. We understand our donors are busy with their daily lives. By joining our Patriots, they can still provide support at a financial level that is convenient for them to stay involved in our program.

Check out our custom site for signing up to be a Patriot.

Excellent Expos

Connecting to the community is our specialty and what better way to spread our message than to participate in one of the many informational expos and resource fairs that are happening in and around Baltimore. Recently, we were fortunate enough to be invited to two such events, giving us the opportunity to connect with local businesses looking to get involved in our mission, individuals looking to volunteer, and veterans in need of assistance. Maryland Multi-Housing Association’s (MMHA) Luck of the MMHA Expo was a great chance for us to meet those in the multi housing industry, passing out information about our mission and those we serve. MMHA has supported The Baltimore Station for more than 13 years and we love any opportunity to connect with their community. We also had a table at this year’s B’more Healthy Expo. This event connects us to those in need as well as other organizations providing services in the Baltimore area who we can refer clients to for additional assistance.

We are always grateful for an opportunity to share our mission with the public and speak with those who have experience in homeless and veteran services to share resources. Do you know of a good opportunity for The Baltimore Station to connect with local businesses looking to help veterans, individuals looking for volunteer opportunities, or community members in need of assistance? You've Been Chopped - The Baltimore Station Edition

Have you ever thought about hosting your own Food Network competition like Chopped, Guy’s Grocery Games, or Beat Bobby Flay? We don’t have the space to fit aisles of food or the budget to fly in a celebrity chef, but we do have some amazing cooking talent and creative clients always ready for a competition! Led by our kitchen team, four cooks paired with four clients to compete in three rounds: appetizer, main dish, and dessert. Each round included surprise ingredients meant to challenge the duos and lead to delicious dishes for our esteemed panel of judges representing staff and clients to taste.

So, what ingredients did our participants have to use? The appetizer round required the use of chicken, tomatoes, and apples; main dish was steak, cauliflower, and chocolate; and the dessert round was pizza dough and bananas. We even added our own twist, keeping all contestants until the end instead of eliminating as we went. This gave us plenty of food to salivate over, but definitely made deciding a winner all the more difficult. A few favorites included Yolanda’s apple sauce jam on chicken, Suzie’s cauliflower mash on strip steak, Devon’s chocolate sauce with steak bites, and Patricia’s puff pastry with candied oranges and dried cranberries inside. Everyone had a wonderful time testing new recipes and trying some amazing creations. Everything was so good, in the end we decided to congratulate all contestants for their hard work and creative execution, passing out prizes to everyone. We look forward to more competitions in the future!

Which ingredient combo would you be most inspired by?
Chicken, tomatoes and apples
Steak, cauliflower and chocolate
Pizza dough and bananas
