CELEBRATIONS AND OBSERVANCES IN JANUARY

World Braille Day

World Braille Day is celebrated on January 4th, Louis Braille’s birthday. Louis Braille was the inventor of braille! Born in 1809 in France, Louis became blind after a childhood accident. At 15 years old, he created a reading and writing system composed of alphabetic and numerical symbols using six dots to represent each letter and number and even musical, mathematical, and scientific symbols.

Martin Luther King Jr Day

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is observed on the third Monday in January.

President Ronald Reagan signed a bill on November 2, 1983, creating a federal holiday in Dr. King’s honor. Martin Luther King Jr. Day was first observed as a national holiday on January 20, 1986. This year it was celebrated on January 15, 2024.

You can visit the National Civil Rights Museum, to learn more about the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the influential decisions, monumental actions, and steadfast progressions of humanitarian rights that reach far beyond the civil rights movement.

California Health Care Foundation's Statewide Survey on CalAIM Experiences: Implementer Views After 18 Months of Reforms

211/CIE San Diego was proud to engage partners and the social services sector across California, along with UCSF SIREN, to participate in this important statewide survey on CalAIM. During the summer of 2023, the California Health Care Foundation commissioned a statewide survey about CalAIM (California's Medicaid reform) implementation among people working at managed care plans, health care organizations, behavioral health organizations, and social services organizations. A total of 1,196 individuals completed the survey, including 412 from social service organizations.

This survey data will be further analyzed by the UCSF SIREN team and will help inform the selection of 5 counties for a deeper dive analysis. Additionally, a huge thank you to the CalAIM Community of Practice, co-facilitated by 211/CIE San Diego and Health Leads, who helped to disseminate this survey throughout their partner networks.
