Start 2023 off with Coaching Skills to Power Your Success
The very essence of college is learning with others. Whether virtual or in person, college coursework connects students with knowledgeable, experienced faculty and other students to benefit from the exchange of knowledge. However, a surprising number of students feel they should be able to perform to the top of their capabilities on their own -- and even that working alone is somehow superior. Whether this comes from a "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" mentality, a fear of individuals in authority, or another source, solo work can limit learning and performance if self-imposed when collaboration would be more effective. Exam time finds many students locking themselves away to cram rather than learning in conversation.
With their front seat view of how students operate, coaches can get a sense of how a student is choosing to learn. Many students benefit from studying on their own, of course, but a coaching conversation -- with a coach, advisor, or faculty member -- can reveal when a student is stuck but resisting support or collaboration as a solution. In such a situation, students may be so determined to learn alone that they don't even look for what support is available.
A coach might ask questions like these:
- What does your course website offer in terms of study guides or other practice?
- Who could help you get "over the hump" with this work?
- When does your professor/TA hold office hours, and how might that benefit you?
- What tutoring might be available for this course?
- With whom in your class would you be willing to connect to talk through this work?
- When has working with someone made a difference for you with an assignment?
- How does collaboration figure into the career you hope to enter after college?
