11th Sunday, Ordinary Time

To know the Holy Spirit and Live the Life of Christ

Friends,

When I was 16 years old I made a promise to the Lord. I told God I would do a year of volunteer service for Him. I was thinking that I would work with the poor in either South America or Africa. I did not think too much about my promise to the Lord until I graduated from college. At that point, God reminded me of the promise I made to Him. After looking at different service possibilities, I decided to join the National Evangelization Teams, i.e. NET.

NET is a Catholic youth ministry that reaches out to specifically high-school age kids in the USA, Canada, England, and Australia with the Gospel message of Jesus Christ. In the USA alone there are currently 8 NET teams each composed of approximately 12 young men and women from the ages of 18-28 traveling around our country sharing the healing and hope of Jesus with youth through retreats. Through all the teams’ evangelistic retreats, this year over 100,000 people will be invited to know the unconditional love and forgiveness of God in a personal way. NET is a truly amazing, dynamic and needed ministry within the Catholic Church!

NET gets its name from Luke 5 when Jesus calls Simon Peter to follow Him. Simon was a fisherman. Jesus teaches Simon that he will stop fishing for fish and start fishing for men. But what does it mean to fish for men? It means that Simon will use his energy, time and skill to bring the unconditional love, forgiveness and life of God to everyone he meets. Doesn’t that sound like a challenging but wonderful job description? NET wants to follow that same job description as they serve youth. As a matter of fact, if you consider yourself a Catholic, you have the responsibility to be a fisher of men. Regardless of what job you have or wherever you are, as a Catholic Christian you have the responsibility to use your time, energy and skill to share, in both word and deed, the unconditional love of God to everyone you meet. Fishing for men is not an optional part of being in the Church- we are all called, like Simon our first Pope, to fish for men.

The church doesn’t have a mission. The church IS a mission.

I have a vision for myself that I hope will become the vision you have of yourself when you get to heaven. The scene is this: I am in heaven and there are a lot of people pointing their fingers at me. They aren’t mad; in fact, they have the biggest smiles on their faces. They are all saying to Jesus, “I am here because of him. I am here because he told me about YOU.” Imagine that!

You are loved!

Fr. John

We need a little help...
