PARENT TESTIMONIAL

"Jennifer, I wanted to thank you again for your encouragement and the class that Jordyn took from you this summer. I know she was a little shy about posting her SAT test score.

She just got her PSAT and I don't think her teacher at Dawson will let her hide her terrific score. (Score redacted for the student's privacy.) Any advice you can provide would be great. I know you went to OU. On the college day at Dawson, the OU recruiter loved Jordyn. We plan to follow up with her soon.

Thanks again, I know the class helped and I have encouraged several people to have their kids take it at the Pearland location. Take care and happy holidays."

Current Scholar Ready students asked Scholar Ready's Class of 2020 and 2021 about applying for college admission and scholarships.

Akeena Smith graduated from St. Pius X High School in 2020. She currently attends Houston Baptist University, located in Houston, Texas, where she is majoring in Cinematic Arts. I prepared Ms. Smith for her PSAT.

Here are her lightly edited responses.

You have to do all these things to get into college and get scholarships. Where's the right place to start?
The right place to start to get into college and receive scholarships is to apply and do not underestimate yourself.

How many colleges should you apply to? Is it better to throw everything at the wall to see what sticks? Or just pinpoint a few schools and apply to those?
Don't set a limit for the number of colleges or universities that you apply for. You have more options and opportunities when you apply for more schools.

How do you correctly judge a college when it's telling you what it can offer? How do you know what's real? How do you know how to evaluate the claims?
The way you correctly judge a college when it's telling you what it can offer is by doing research. Look at websites such as Niche, where there is input from current students and alumni. Some of the best advice you can get about a college or university comes from someone who actually attends or has attended the school.

Were the essays for the applications hard or easy?
All of the essays for the applications that I submitted were easy, mainly because I started writing my essays my junior year of high school.

ApplyTexas Essay - Get Started

How personal should you get in your personal essay?
You should not get too personal in an essay unless the prompt wants you to get too personal. Getting very personal in an essay can lead you off-topic. For many universities, applicants' essays matter even if they have amazing test scores.

How long should you wait for a response from the admissions office?
On average, you should wait three to five weeks depending on the university. Public institutions usually take about four weeks because of the high number of students applying. Private institutions' admissions criteria are often more numerous and stringent than those of public colleges. Therefore, expect to wait longer than 4 weeks for a response from a private college.

What was it like if you got denied by a college that you wanted to go to?
I was not denied by a college or university that I wanted to attend.

Were new criteria established for college admission since the COVID-19 pandemic?
Most colleges stopped requiring the SAT and ACT for the 2020-2021 school year for incoming students. Some colleges are still not requiring the entrance exams for the upcoming school year.

What guidance would you provide to a tenth grader to help him or her be successful in high school and competitively prepared for college?
It is never too early to look into your career, look for schools, or apply for scholarships. Doing those things now will give you a head start and will open up more opportunities.
