WEEKLY UPDATE

A Note from the Rector

Dear St. Paul's,

I was sipping coffee in a relative’s kitchen one morning when the local news mentioned “an 80-year-old woman.” My relative laughed to herself and said, “My first thought is, ‘oh, that old woman!’ Then I remember I’m older than that.”

Most of us have a hard time keeping up with ourselves. The person in the mirror looks older than the self we have come to know, or the one we think we present. It’s not just age; it’s also learning and growth. When I started at St. Paul’s seven years ago, I got used to being the “new” rector. I was even in a diocesan group of first-time rectors. It was a comfortable identity until a year or two ago, when I looked around a committee meeting and had a startling realization: Uh-oh, I think I’m the only one here who thinks I’m new at this.

Many Episcopalians are beset by a sort of spiritual impostor syndrome: I don’t know enough, I don’t pray enough, my faith isn’t well formed; surely my fellow parishioners are somehow more authentically Christian than I am.

Maybe some of them are. But when you look around the pews on Sunday, it may be that your role models in the faith don’t think of themselves that way at all. It might even be that some of them identify you as a model Christian. Take stock of where you’ve met God and what you’ve been through with God. Your faith may be more mature than you think.

Summer Small Groups and Meetups

St. Paul's is offering a variety of small groups this summer, covering a wide range of topics and interests. These small groups provide a great opportunity to meet some kindred spirits for fun, fellowship, discussion, or reflection a few times between June and August. Learn more and sign up for one (or more!) of the groups here.

Adult Formation

“Shrine Mont’s Artist”: A Book Talk with Sue Rainey – Did you know that Shrine Mont, the Diocese of Virginia’s mountain retreat center, is also the home of an important collection of artworks by John Douglas Woodward? Woodward was one of the country’s best-known illustrators in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and the uncle of Shrine Mont’s founder. He is also the subject of parishioner Sue Rainey’s new book, Picturesque Palestine, Sinai and Egypt: Artworks and Letters by John Douglas Woodward, 1878-1879, documenting Woodward’s travels in the Holy Land. Parishioners, friends, and neighbors are invited to a presentation and celebration with Sue right after the 10 a.m. service next Sunday, June 16. Refreshments will be served, and Shrine Mont staff will be on hand with books for sale and information about Shrine Mont’s role as steward and conservator of Woodward’s work.

Education for Ministry (EfM) Openings for Fall 2024EfM is a unique program of theological education for laypeople in which participants explore faith and the Church through study, prayer, and theological reflection. In weekly small-group meetings during the academic year, EfM helps participants encounter the breadth and depth of the Christian tradition and bring it into conversation with their own experiences. The full curriculum is four years long (Year 1, Old Testament; Year 2, New Testament; Year 3, church history; Year 4, theology, ethics, and interfaith encounter) but participants only commit to one year at a time. EfM is a program of the School of Theology at Sewanee: The University of the South, and enrolls thousands of participants every year in small groups around the world. Dozens of parishioners and neighbors have completed the course in the decades since St. Paul’s began sponsoring EfM groups. Learn more here.

For the 2024-2025 year, EfM will continue meeting virtually on Monday mornings, 9:15 to 11:45, from September 9 to May 19.

Summer Newsletter Schedule

Our newsletter has moved to a biweekly schedule for the summer months. Our next publication date will be June 20.

Prayers of the Parish

Holding each other's joys, sorrows, and concerns before God in prayer is a spiritual practice that characterizes our life together at St. Paul's. In our worship services we pray each other's prayers together. Outside of our time together many parishioners make it part of their daily lives to pray the prayers of the parish community. You are invited to participate in your own way.

Thanks be to God
