Beloved,

Do you sometimes wonder what you are doing being part of a church? What does church do, what does it accomplish, what difference does church make, not only in our lives but in the life of our community and city? I hope that your answer to that is, many things! To my mind, one of the clearest demonstrations of what church is all about happened just a few days ago, Holy Week and Easter. I am not thinking here about liturgy or worship or doctrine. What came home to me, really powerfully this year, was looking around at everyone who helped to organize, lead and facilitate, and everyone like you who participated in our worship and events. And it struck me that despite how different we are – socially, politically, economically, educationally, with all of our unique life stories – we were able to come together in unity during that sacred week and celebrated our common belief in something beyond ourselves (God). Our differences were, and are, important, they make us who we are, but during Holy Week those differences were a source of enrichment not division, of blessing not a problem to be overcome.

Our church community is a visible sign of God’s Dream in our community – everyone is included, everyone has a place, everyone is entitled to be treated with respect and dignity. I am not saying that we are perfect or that we always live according to our values, but the desire is there, we a trying.

May God continue to bless our church community, and may our community be a blessing to our city!

Confirmation Classes

Bishop Akiyama will be with us on Sunday, May 19th – Pentecost Sunday. In the Episcopal tradition there are three routes into full membership of the Church: baptism, confirmation and being formally received into the Episcopal Church. If you have not been baptized, then we offer baptism; for those who have already been baptized but not confirmed, we offer confirmation. For those who have been baptized and confirmed in another church tradition, we offer formal reception into the Episcopal Church. All of these bring you into full membership of both the Episcopal Church, the Anglican Communion and St. Paul’s local church community. Being in full membership means that you can serve on the vestry, or as a church officer, and vote at our Annual General Meetings, among other things.

If you are interested in pursuing spiritual membership, I will be offering 5 preparation classes. We take a dive into our Episcopal traditions, the Book of Common Prayer, our worship, the life of prayer, and daily living as well as your own questions. There will be two class times to choose from – both classes will have the same content:

Sundays after church, beginning on Sunday, April 7 th from 12noon – 1.00pm

Wednesday afternoon, beginning on Wednesday, April 10 th from 4.00pm – 5.00pm

If you are interested in exploring this further and would like some more information or you have questions, please contact me or Amy Goerger:

Cover Image: Christ Appears to the Disciples at the Table after the Resurrection, egg tempera painting with gold leaf on wood panel, by Duccio di Buoninsegna, Siena, Italy 1308-1311.  This was a panel in the Maestà, commissioned for the high altar of the Siena Cathedral in 1308 and finished in 1311. Duccio’s style was similar to Byzantine art, but more inviting and warm with color, and more three-dimensional with complex ordering of space and putting his figures in architectural settings. The altarpiece was the largest made at the time of its completion with paintings on both the front and back side with a total of forty-three scenes.
