EASTER 7 – MAY 12

Baptism this Sunday

Come and rejoice in the baptism (at the 10:15 service) of Lennie Vera Layne Snodgrass and renew your own baptismal vows. Phil Cunningham will preach at both services.

Transitions

As we await the arrival of Dean-elect Rebecca Barnes, we will have a few other transitions in the Cathedral community. Dean Twila’s last Sunday will be Trinity Sunday, May 26. She will be in the office through the end of the month, then will work on transition details with Mother Rebecca. As many of you know, she has postponed surgery on her foot to serve with the Cathedral in this transition and will be attending to that later in June. She also continues her work with our Diocesan Partnership.

• During the month of June, there will be a series of guest presiders (even a dean or two) and preachers, including new ordinands. You’ll hear more about that in the weeks ahead.

• The Rev. Canon Mike Hadaway, who has served with outreach programs since the summer of 2022, will be ending his time with the Cathedral at the end of May. We will have an opportunity to express our gratitude at the “Sorting Saturday,” 10 a.m. on May 25. Read his letter to the Cathedral community here.

• In this time of transition, The Rev. Canon Barbara Price continues her role with pastoral care.

• Rachel Pinti, a seminarian at Yale Divinity School, who is well known to the Cathedral community, will join us this summer, beginning in late May, to support the Garden of Love and other outreach. She will also be working on a project to assess hunger needs in the downtown community and potential collaborative partners, to present to the new Dean.

Please keep Mother Rebecca and her spouse, The Rev. Liz Grohowski, in your prayers, as they make the transition to the Cathedral and say goodbye to their respective congregations. Learn more about Mother Rebecca’s ministry in this

article from the Scranton news.

May 14 Vigil

From our Diocesan Partnership news:

On Tuesday, May 14 at 5 p.m., St. Philip's, Buffalo will hold a vigil outside the TOPS Supermarket on Jefferson Avenue in Buffalo. The service will mark the second anniversary of the racially motivated mass shooting that took place at the store in 2022. “The tragedy that occurred on May 14, 2022, is a stark and painful reminder that racism and hate crimes can happen anywhere,” said the Rev. Stephen Lane, rector of St. Philip’s. “It’s important to recognize these events, not only to mourn the loss and support those affected, but also to continue the conversation about racial justice and work towards a society where such acts of hate are no longer repeated.”

Zeneta and Zaire's Book Drive

On Sunday, May 19, 1-3 pm, Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Buffalo will host an afternoon reception where folks will bring books to donate to Zeneta and Zaire’s Book Drive and join in small group conversations about the books they selected. Zaire is a survivor of the shooting at Tops on May 14, 2022; he and his mother Zeneta collect and distribute books to community centers, schools, and local organizations to start conversations at a grassroots level in Buffalo. Learn more here.

Directory Updates and Photos

This Sunday and May 19

After each worship service, you are invited to check your directory information and offer updates (or add your name!) and have an informal photo taken. This will be used to create a directory to share in the congregation and to help the new dean get to know the Cathedral community. After the 10:15 service, each of these Sundays, this will take place in the Walker Room and volunteers are needed to help with the directory checks and photos.

Ordinations May 18

Persons needed to assist – including hospitality and as greeters/ushers

One of the wonderful roles for a Cathedral is to host Diocesan Partnership worship services and we will be the site for ordinations at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 18. We need volunteers to serve in a variety of ways, including with hospitality (including “coffee hour” food contributions for the reception) and as greeters/ushers. We cannot yet announce who will be ordained, but please consider joining a Cathedral crew to help make this a memorable day for them.

Sunday, May 19 – On this day, we recognize the descent of the Holy Spirit and signal of God’s presence – alive and always with us – enlivening God’s mission in the world. Wear red and come to pray for the Cathedral’s mission in our downtown neighborhood, the city of Buffalo, and beyond.

Garden of Love Sorting Saturdays

The Garden of Love will hold one more “Sorting Saturday” this spring – 10 am to noon, May 25 – so it’s time to start sorting through your closets and such for warmer weather items to donate for our neighbors in need. On sorting days, volunteers go through donations and prepare racks of clothing to distribute in the weeks ahead. Donations can be brought to the first floor of the ministry center (at the Main Street end of Cathedral Park) on the sorting days or email Canon Mike to arrange another time during the week. Clothing is distributed at the Garden of Love ministry on Tuesdays, 11:30-1. As the weather warms, we need washable, easy-care clothing items, especially for men, including light jackets, hoodies, and rain gear; gently-word athletic shoes, jeans and pants, shirts and tees. Light, washable blankets, hats, umbrellas, belts, and bags are also nice to have on hand.
