Update on Oksana, Mark and Margo from Ukraine

Basia shared this update on the family staying at her family's house in Bialystok, Poland after fleeing the Russian invasion of Ukraine:

Oksana, Margo and Mark are doing fine. They were sick with flu the end of Fall and almost the whole December, but now are healthy and enjoying playing in the snow in Bialystok.

In January, temperatures fell below -20 C (below -30 F). The twins will celebrate their 6th birthday on February 28. They love preschool, which is next to the house, and will start kindergarten (if the war continues and they stay in Bialystok) on September 1st.

They are now fluent in Polish, Russian, and Ukrainian! Oksana emailed me a sample of the twins singing a Polish carol (in Polish) and a Ukrainian patriotic song (in Ukrainian). Their language skills are very impressive!

Oksana works part time, when kids are in school and are not sick, mainly cleaning houses in the vicinity. But mostly she takes very good care of the kids, preparing homemade food, reading to the kids, and singing with kids.

As always, if you would like to send some support to cover some of the costs of heating and groceries for this family, please contact Joan in the church office, or drop a check in the mail or the plate on Sunday and note "Ukraine Support"

What is Read2Succeed?

Orange County Public Schools' Read2Succeed program engages volunteers who provide tutoring and mentoring to first- and second-grade students who are developing early literacy skills.

Additional info: Trained volunteers meet with students once or twice a week on school campus during school hours. In addition to assisting with reading skills, students form a positive attitude toward reading and build self-confidence.

We are asking for at least a six month commitment from volunteers in this program. Providing a sense of continuity with adult relationships is an important part of the program.
