Care of Creation Summer Hikes

Hikers:

According to my "phone" the weather is supposed to be nice this coming Saturday for our first COC hike (June 24, 2017).

Given the apparent interest and conditions in the mountains I think our destination should be Ramparts Ridge near Longmire in Rainier National Park.  The snow is gone on this ridge because the elevation is  just 4000 feet at the top; and it is a moderate 4 mile loop trail.  There is also a nature walk and other activities at Longmire.  So it should be a good place to go for a variety of people. Families with folks of all ages are invited.

We will meet at the church at 8 a.m., form car pools, and depart as soon thereafter as we can.

Can you please contact me if you are going and can drive so we know we have enough drivers for this trip?  Also, if you are a senior and have a senior pass please bring it along.

It should be a really great time.

Warm best,

Tom Hulst

The Care of Creation committee is sponsoring four hikes this summer--one per month alternating between Fridays and Saturdays. The heavy precipitation (snow) this year will likely preclude getting above 5,000 feet until late July or early August. We can adjust the destinations as we get closer and know the conditions better.  The dates and tentative destinations are listed below.

Saturday, June 24:  Rattlesnake Ledge, Packwood Lake, or Rampart Ridge

Friday, July 21:   Summit Lake

Saturday, August 5: Chinook Pass

Friday, September 8: Sunrise (Rainier) or Hurricane Ridge (Olympics)

We will meet at the church at 8 a.m. on the appointed days and form car pools.  Hikers should have water, sun cream, sun glasses, lunch, first aide, camera, extra clothing, good hiking shoes, and money to help defray the costs of gas for drivers.  We will not go if it is raining.

Thank You from Emergency Food Network

Dear Congregation:

Thank you for your donation of $790 to Emergency Food Network.  Your gift helps provide healthy, nutritious food to our neighbors in need throughout Pierce County.  Your gift ensures that guests are able to leave with enough food for nine meals each time they visit one of our Partner Programs.

The summers is a time of increased need in our community.  There are 59,000 students in Pierce County who receive free or reduced-cost much.  When schools are out for the summer, many students will lose access to the meals that they rely on.  While there are some summer meal programs, the majority of students will not have access to these meals.  Our Partner Programs must be ready to serve more families, as households turn to food pantries to fill the gap.  Your gift will help EFN support our Partner Programs through this time of increased need.

Emergency Food Network is appreciative of your generosity.  Without you, were would not have been able to distribute more than one million pounds of food each month.  On behalf of those who need it most, we thank you for helping us provide healthy, nutritious food so that no person goes hungry.

Gratefully, Helen McGovern-Pilant, Executive Director
