Remembering Our Loved Ones
This coming Sunday, November 6 is All Saints Sunday
. As we give thanks for all the saints who have gone before us, you are invited to bring a framed picture of a loved one who has died and then set the picture on one of the tables that we will place beside the altar. You may do this before the service begins or during the opening hymn.

Refugee Support Team Needs
The Refugee Support Team is asking for household items to set up an apartment for our Ugandan refugee family in anticipation of their move to an apartment soon.
Please, see the refugee support table
on Sunday
and check out the need for both home furnishing and smaller household items. If you have gently used or new items you can donate, simply pick up the card with the item listed and then bring the donations to church on Sunday, November 13. Thank you for this important welcoming act. It is truly appreciated.

We encourage all members of St. Mark's to vote as a key part of our responsibility as Christians to participate actively as citizens in our country. We invite you especially to prayerfully consider our conversations this fall about our relationship to God and to the environment when you vote on such measures as mass transit (Proposition 1 on Puget Sound Transit) and carbon tax (Initiative 732). Wanted: Lunch Buddies for DeLong Elementary!
You can make a difference in the life of a child! The counselor at DeLong Elementary School has asked St. Mark's to provide more Lunch Buddies for this school year. Each adult is matched with 2 fourth grade students whose teachers have identified as needing the gift of time from a caring adult. You choose if you prefer to have girls or boys.
Volunteer chooses Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. DeLong Elementary is near South 12th and Orchard Street.
Eat lunch with Buddy at 12:40 and spend recess time together until 1:30. The relationship is limited to this time at the school and volunteers must pass a Volunteer Background Check with the Tacoma School District.
About one hour each week seems "tiny." I asked the counselor if she thought it really made a difference to the students. "Yes!, you probably don't "see" the influence you have, but the teachers keep asking if there can be more Lunch Buddies."
You may be thinking that a school year is a large commitment. And it is. However, every Lunch Buddy for the past 4 years has missed some weeks because of travel. They just let the teacher and students know in advance.
Consider this opportunity. Contact me with questions and to volunteer.

Healing the Heart of Democracy-
This election season has been particularly difficult, and many of us feel worn down by the tone and content of the national political dialogue. If you need stepping stones for emotional and intellectual healing, come join us we are introduced to Parker Palmer's approach to *"Healing the Heart of Democracy". "For those of us who want to see democracy survive and thrive-and we are legion-the heart is where everything begins: that grounded place in each of us where we can overcome fear, rediscover that we are members of one another, and embrace the conflicts that threaten democracy as openings to new life for us and for our nation." - (from the "Prelude" in Parker J. Palmer's Healing the Heart of Democracy). Our conversation will be led by Michelle Marshman.
