Staffing Announcements:

Meg Cutting Named New Organist

After a national search, we are delighted to announce that Meg Cutting will be St. Luke’s new organist. Meg was an Organ Scholar at St. James Cathedral in Chicago from 2020-2022, during which time she worked with their intergenerational Cathedral Choir as well as the chorister program, which is grounded in the Royal School of Church Music. She is a concert organist, organ and piano teacher, and church musician. Meg is a bi-vocational, working by day on the administrative side of a local private equity firm, while weeknights and weekends are dedicated to her work as a musician. The committee was deeply impressed with Meg’s excellence as an organist, an accompanist, and a professional.

Meg holds a Master of Music in Organ Performance from the Yale School of Music and Yale Institute of Sacred Music. During her time there, she studied organ with Martin Jean, organ improvisation with Jeffrey Brillhart, and choral conducting with Jeffrey Douma. She also holds a Bachelor of Music in Organ Performance from the Eastman School of Music, where she studied in the studio of Nathan Laube. Meg has developed a passionate interest in the music of twentieth-century French organ composers, such as Messiaen and Alain. She resides in Chicago with her partner Max.

Meg’s first Sunday on the bench will be September 8th.

Garth Howe to Serve as Deacon

We also welcome the Rev. Garth Howe as St. Luke’s second deacon. Garth’s ministerial focus is antiracism, specifically indigenous ministry. He will work closely with St. Luke’s Antiracism Action Committee, Land Acknowledgement Working Group, and Formation Committee.

Garth’s professional background is in finance and administration, primarily in the financial services sector and most recently at the Church Pension Group, from which he retired in June 2024. Garth is a two-spirit Indigenous person of the Stockbridge/Mohican and Lower Yanktonai Sioux peoples. He is an enrolled member of the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe, Ft. Thompson, SD. Garth explains, “My father was born on a reservation, and both my paternal grandparents were forcibly placed in South Dakota Boarding Schools. I am biracial - my maternal lineage is German.” He was born and raised in Southern California and now lives in East Lakeview with his husband, Michael, and English Chocolate Lab. His daughter and granddaughter live in Leeds, England.

Garth and Deacon Rick Incorvati will share Sunday morning diaconal duties and will also help out the crucifer team. One Sunday a month, each will represent St. Luke’s in and to the wider church. Garth will work with many congregations on Indigenous justice matters, and Rick will work to build our interfaith partnerships in the greater Evanston area. Deacons serve at the direction of the bishop. In the Diocese of Chicago, all deacon letters of engagement begin with a one-year trial engagement, and deacons are non-stipendiary.

Garth’s first Sunday at the altar will be August 25th.

Discussion on Summer Scripture and Hymn Series

Sunday, August 25 at 11:00 AM

Join Rector Kat Banakis and Director of Music Andrew Lewis for a conversation as we wind down our use of A Women's Lectionary for the Whole Church for our scripture passages over the summer and the use of recent hymns by women. What surprised you? What did you learn? What caught you off guard and why? How did these things change or impact your walk with Christ? If possible, please bring specific examples of dates/passages/pieces so that we can all refer to the same lines together at the same time.

Faith in Action

Calling All Fiber Artists:

Prayer Shawl Ministry Starts in September

Monthly Meetings Begin September 9

10:30 AM - 12:00 PM

Join other talented fiber artists in coming together to create beautiful, handcrafted shawls as symbols of love, comfort, and prayer. These prayer shawls will be given out to those in the congregation who may benefit from the love and support a shawl represents. They will also be shared during communion with those who are homebound or in nursing homes, offering a warm embrace from our faith community.

If you are interested in joining this new ministry and sharing your skills as a fiber artist, please contact Belinda Chandler at bchan46@earthlink.net.

St. Luke's Honors Judy Herbert as 2024 Interfaith Action Vision Keeper

Judy Herbert has been selected as St. Luke's 2024 Interfaith Action Vision Keeper, an honor bestowed upon individuals who have made significant contributions to both their faith community and the wider community.

Judy Herbert’s smile on the Sundays she has served as a greeter has welcomed decades of people coming through the doors of St. Luke’s. When her presence alone didn’t put people at ease, often her training as a community health nurse and volunteer with the Mental Health Association and Crisis Intervention did.

A member of the same book club in Evanston for over 50 years, reading The Warmth of Other Suns was transformative for Judy, prodding her to ask questions about her upbringing and digging into the archives of St. Luke’s as to her parish’s involvement at key points in racial history.

Judy has built community wherever she has been – the King Lab School PTA, Highland Garden Club, and now on committees at Westminster Place.

Though she describes her work and faith as “quieter, less showy,” her impact at St. Luke’s includes serving on the task force, the anti-racism committee that established our first antiracism goals, and our vestry during the pivots of COVID. Judy’s gentle questions have brought many rooms to silence, reflection, and faithful witness. St. Luke’s proudly celebrates Judy as our Vision Keeper for making Evanston and St. Luke’s a better place.

The Vision Keepers dinner will be held on September 29, 2024, at the Hilton Doubletree in Skokie. Tickets will be available later this month.

The Great Summer Giveaway!

St. Luke's is cleaning house this summer and providing an opportunity for parishioners to give new life to items no longer in use. Throughout the summer, please continue to browse and take home anything that catches your eye – first come, first served. This week you will find a wide array of items from the St. Luke's kitchen.

Any remaining items will soon be donated to charitable organizations or properly disposed of. If you see something you once donated to St. Luke's in the past, thank you for your donation. We were grateful to use it.

The St. Luke's Trebles - 3rd grade and up

The St. Luke's Trebles receive a high level of musical and vocal training, enabling them to sing music at an adult level. With a custom curriculum, the Trebles experience numerous benefits beyond music: making new friends, greater self-confidence, and higher academic achievement. No prior training is necessary, and the Trebles are open to all children, regardless of any religious affiliation.

Please get in touch with Director of Music Andrew Lewis for more information.

Warning About E-mail Scammers

When you receive an e-mail from a St. Luke's staff member, please note if the sender has 'stlukesevanston.org' at the end of their e-mail address. If not, it is likely not us writing to you. Sadly, there are people out there trying to scam congregation members in multiple churches by posing as clergy and asking them to send them gift cards. We will never ask you for money that way. If someone writes to you posing as Kat or another member of staff, please let us know, report the problem to Google (if it is a Gmail address), block the sender and delete the message.
