Florida Task Force Recommends St. Johns County for State’s First Black History Museum

St. Johns County is the location of the Florida Museum of Black History, as recommended by the Florida Museum of Black History Task Force after its meeting on June 28, 2024, where the Task Force voted 6-1 to formally transmit this recommendation to the Governor and the Legislature. The County’s Office of Public Affairs produced a video for this special announcement.

County Addresses North Beach Flooding

St. Johns County hosted a community forum, a boat tour with elected officials, and a press conference on Friday, June 21, to share options that will address stormwater flooding in North Beach area neighborhoods due to outfalls from the Intracoastal Waterway. The County’s Office of Public Affairs produced a video to recap the activities.

FCC Environmental Services to Begin as Residential Curbside Collection Provider Starting Aug. 1, 2024

Beginning Thursday, Aug. 1, St. Johns County’s new residential curbside collection provider, FCC Environmental Services Florida, LLC, will begin servicing the county. All current service levels will remain in place which include weekly curbside collection of household garbage, yard waste, recycling, and bulk waste as well as scheduled services like appliance pick up requested by customers. Residents can also confirm their collection days on the Recycle Coach website and app.

County Receives $26.5 Million in State Appropriations

St. Johns County announced it will receive $26.5 million in the fiscal year 2025 State of Florida appropriations for five projects, including public safety, transportation, beach restoration, and cultural affairs. Adam Tecler, Director of the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs, updated the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners on June 18, 2024.

Free Beach Shuttle Service July 4-7

St. Johns County, in partnership with the Tourist Development Council, will offer a free shuttle service to Mickler’s Landing Beachfront Park and the St. Johns County Ocean and Fishing Pier from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday, July 4, through Sunday, July 7, weather permitting.

At the regular St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners meeting on Tuesday, June 18, the St. Johns County Parks and Recreation Department inducted John Bert Watson into its Hall of Fame and recognized July as Parks and Recreation Month.

County Rescues 11,000 American Flags

St. Johns County has rescued more than 11,000 American flags through its American Flag Rescue Program. The County started its American Flag Rescue Program in 2019. The program allows residents to properly retire flags with honor and respect. American Flag Drop boxes are available to the public at more than 35 locations throughout St. Johns County. In February 2024, the 10,000th flag was collected at the St. Johns County Tax Collector’s office. A special video was produced with Tax Collector Dennis Hollingsworth to celebrate the milestone.
