Preparing for Sunday
St. Francis subscribes to a weekly service called Preparing for Sunday, which provides some brief commentary on the bible readings for the upcoming weeks. It can be found on the Sermons & Services page on the St. Francis website (https://tinyurl.com/sermonspage). I encourage all of you to consider looking at it prior to Sunday, particularly if you are a lector for the week.

Pentecost (Wear Red)

May 19th is Pentecost Sunday. Remember to wear red! Everybody is invited to join in the festive procession behind the Dove Kite, waving streamers, which will be provided. There will be a lunch that will feature many red foods.

Origami Doves

One of the many traditions at St. Francis involves the making of origami doves, which are hung from the chandeliers in the nave for Pentecost Sunday, May 19th.

Before the doves are folded, you are invited to write prayers of petition, thanksgiving, or remembrance on a prayer paper.

The prayer papers will be available in the Narthex until we fold them on May 12. You may also submit an online prayer through the website, News Page.

The doves flying over us on Pentecost are an awesome and powerful sight, and a remembrance of how we are uplifted and comforted by the prayers of others. Look for the prayer papers and take part in this beautiful connection with our loved ones.

Memorial Day BBQ and Remembrance

Saturday May 25th from 1 - 4 pm

In commemoration of Memorial Day, parishioner Mark Stewart will take us back to the world-changing event of December 7, 1941, at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. With pictures and narration, Mark will explain the events that led up to the surprise attack, what happened that day, and several significant events of the following months as the United States enters World War 2.

For the picnic, hamburgers, hot dogs, and chips will be provided. Please bring a salad or dessert to share. A sign-up will be in the Information Center. Any questions, call Kay Sharp, 541-905-6014.

Movie Tuesday

On May 21, there will be a potluck celebration at St. Francis in the Parish Hall, where we will watch The Philadelphia Eleven, a documentary about the first women ordained to the priesthood in the Episcopal Church, not so long ago! Those eleven women were brave and resilient, and one of them, priest and poet Alla Bozarth, lives on Mt. Hood! Please plan to come by 5 pm on May 21, and bring heavy snacks and friends! Call Terri (503) 982-4825) if you’d like a ride.

Tribute Chairs

The music program is a vital part of our church’s ministries and has contributed to the success and growth of our Parish. It has now grown to nearly 30 members. This growth has exceeded the original number of seats provided in the choir loft. The loft area (platform) has been increased by 50% thanks to Robert Campbell and a few helpers. The choir currently sits on a combination of old pews (with a crack in the seat) and folding chairs, which leads to uncomfortable seating with no place for members to put their music and books except the floor, and to pile them in the pews afterward.

To help reimburse the capital improvements fund for the purchase of the 30 chairs, which are designed for choirs with shelves and places for books and music, the choir is asking for your help and a chance for you to honor God, your family, yourself, or a loved one by contributing. We are working on ways to recognize your gift of full or shared chairs.

Choir members of our church family are asking your help to reimburse the church’s capital fund, provide them with comfortable and proper seating for their practices and services, and a way to honor God and those you love(d).

Did You Know? - Ceiling

Standing at the foot of the sanctuary steps, one looks up at painted panels depicting the life and ministry of St. Francis of Assisi, as rendered by artist Dorothy Hagerty, Ph.D. from Albany Oregon. There are 1,100 pieces of wood in the ceiling panels.

Done in oil on mahogany panels, scenes from the life of Francis take the form of a cross with the first panel being the top of the cross. Numbered in order, panels 1 through 6 move toward the back of the church, with panels 7 and 8 forming the arms of the cross on each side of panel 2.

Ministry Prayers – Architectural Advisory Ministry

Each week, in our Prayers of the People, we pray for a ministry here at St. Francis. This week, we pray for our Architectural Advisory Ministry. The Architectural Advisory Ministry is headed by the Junior Warden. Meetings are called if there is an issue concerning the church buildings and grounds that would involve what would be considered remodeling work. The Ministry meets to research options and make recommendations to the Vestry. The current project for Spring/Summer of 2024, is the upkeep of the wooden benches and structures in the Tower Garden, the Memorial Garden, and Koko's Garden. If you are interested in participating, please contact Betsy Yacob.

Parish Outreach

Wilsonville Food Bank

The food bank is in need of CEREAL, TOILET PAPER, and TISSUES. They do NOT need peanut butter at this time. They also do not need fruit, rice, or pasta, and cannot store fresh fruit. Please put any donations in the cart in the Narthex. A volunteer takes the food to the Food Bank every Tuesday.
