Laura Pittman

called as

Parish Administrator

I am pleased to announce that I have called St. Bede’s own Laura Pittman to serve as Parish Administrator effective upon the retirement of Muriel Diguette at the end of July. Laura will assume this role after most recently serving as the front desk manager for St. Benedict’s Episcopal School and Church in Smyrna for the past year-and-a-half. Prior to that, Laura taught for sixteen years in the DeKalb County School System – mostly at Briarlake Elementary (where St. Bede’s first began worshipping back in 1960). Laura comes from a family of folks who have worked in the Church and she herself holds advanced degrees in theology and religion from Columbia Theological Seminary and Vanderbilt University. Laura’s first language is English and she also speaks conversational Spanish. She has taught in our ESOL program for several years. Laura’s introduction to St. Bede’s occurred when one of her students at Briarlake asked Laura to be their godparent at their baptism at St. Bede’s. Please join me in welcoming Laura to this new role.

Peace,

Chad

Laura’s first day in the office will be Monday, July 24. She and Muriel will overlap for a week and Muriel will wrap up around the first of August (you will hear more later about how we will celebrate Muriel’s ministry with us). Until the week of July 24, please continue to contact Muriel for any Parish Administration needs. Laura’s email will be: lpittman@stbedes.org and the Parish Administrator can also be reached by emailing: info@stbedes.org.

El Refugio Visit

on Saturday, August 5th

El Refugio (the refuge/shelter) is a hospitality ministry located in Lumpkin, Georgia about 2+ hours south of Atlanta. Its mission is to support the immigrant detainees who are in Stewart Detention Center, a for profit prison that houses only immigrants, many of whom turned themselves in at the border seeking refuge. El Refugio has a house in Lumpkin where family members of detainees can stay and eat for free while they visit their incarcerated loved one. Those detained at Stewart who do not have family members or friends in this country are visited by volunteers from El Refugio. An inmate is allowed one visit (through plexiglass, speaking on phones) for one hour per week. Stewart Detention Center closed its doors to all visits in March, 2020 as did all Georgia prisons. However, this prison only allowed visits to inmates to begin again this spring after much lobbying on the party of many concerned people. St. Bede’s supports El Refugio in three ways. We send a sum of money every year to support their ministry. We sometimes have special collections (backpacks for those being deported; Christmas cards for inmates). A small group of parishioners has been traveling to Lumpkin once a quarter since 2016 to visit detainees and have fellowship with the families of the detainees. At this time only those people who can speak Spanish are needed for visitations. Our first scheduled visitation since March, 2020 is Saturday, August 5th .

McLemore's Musings

We hope you are enjoying a new feature in St. Bede's E-News - McLemore's Musings. Many of you have met the Rev'd Bill McLemore who has joined the St. Bede's community. Bill has been a priest for over 57 years and has served parishes all over the Episcopal Church. Bill is the former archivist of the Diocese of Atlanta and authored the 100th anniversary book on the history of the Diocese. Bill is also an artist and has used his artistic skills and sense of humor for many years to draw hundreds of cartoon that comically comment on life in the Episcopal Church. Each week we will share a cartoon here that Bill selects from his collection. Enjoy!

Friend in Christ,

As violence escalates in Ukraine, over one million people have already fled the country — and the borders are flooded with many more people desperate to leave.

Almost all of them are women and children who have had to seek safety on their own, leaving their husbands, fathers, brothers and sons behind.

As this crisis continues to evolve, we are working with Anglican agencies and our other partners to provide humanitarian assistance, and urgently ask for your help.

Your emergency gift today will support our immediate response, providing cash, blankets, hygiene supplies and other needs as this crisis unfolds.

Our faith networks are currently on the ground in the border areas of Poland, Hungary and Romania, and we will continue to coordinate with them in order to help those who have been displaced. Specifically, our partner ACT Alliance is helping families on the Hungarian border, and our Anglican partners are mobilizing both an immediate and long-term response in Poland, Romania and Hungary.

Yours faithfully,

Robert W. Radtke
