MESSAGE FROM THE VICAR

Dear St. Augustine's 'ohana,

What does it mean to follow Jesus? Our gospel readings during the season of Epiphany relay stories about the disciples as they are called to become followers of Jesus.

While their decisions to leave their livelihoods and familiar routines may have been sudden, their transformations are not. Their processes of becoming followers unfold as we approach the season of Lent, encounter the mysteries of Easter, and move into years and decades of spiritual work in the world.

Like the disciples, we are called to follow. Like the disciples, our processes of becoming followers happen gradually as we learn, make mistakes, and turn to find the path again. Our spiritual lives evolve.

This season of Epiphany allows us time to reflect on our paths as followers. Join us this Sunday morning for worship services and fellowship time as we ponder the unfolding of our spiritual lives. We'll ask questions to take us deeper into our reflections for the season of Epiphany:

  • What does becoming a follower mean today?
  • How are you called to spiritual transformation through your uniquely personal process of becoming a disciple of Christ?
  • How has your faith changed over the years?
  • In what ways does your spiritual life meet real life?

Blessings,

Vicar Jennifer

REMINDER ABOUT PLEDGES

To aid our budgeting process for 2024, please give careful consideration to a financial pledge to St. Augustine's. Each 'ohana received a mailing with a pledge card. Please bring your completed pledge card to church and place it in the offering plate or put it in the mail slot outside the church admin office. You can also mail it to the church at:

St. Augustine's Episcopal Church

PO Box 220

Kapaau, HI 96755

If you need a pledge card, they are available in the church, in Walker Hall, or click here to download and print.

Your support for St. Augustine's is much appreciated! We have several large projects in 2024, such as removing bees and tenting for termites. If you are interested in making a special contribution for a specific project, please contact Vicar Jennifer or Cindy Sakai.

Mahalo nui for your gifts of time, talents, and funds! Every bit of what you do helps us further our mission "to be the love of God and to feel the love of God" at St. Augustine's and in our North Kohala community!

UPDATE ON BEES

John Sakai reports that he has cleared the bee hive in the church. He filled a trash bag with honeycomb—that's a LOT! There were no bees present. The next step is to treat that area to prevent future bee attraction and then seal any holes where bees might gain access.

He is currently working with the termite team at Bowman to schedule tenting. Mahalo nui, John, for your amazing dedication to getting this done for St. Augustine's. Mahalo also to Dave Lambrecht for his assistance.

<--- PICTURED HERE - Scaffolding on the church aids in addressing the bee problem. Stacey Chun, Ag technician at the Hawai'i Department of Agriculture, DOA Additional scaffolding is installed above the vestibule to help workers find and seal entry points in the roof where bees enter. We are almost ready to tent for termites!

Big mahalo to Bishop's Warden John Sakai for all his hard work to organize and shepherd these efforts to preserve our beautiful historic church!
