MESSAGE FROM THE VICAR

Dear St. Augustine's 'ohana,

Our Easter season has just begun! As we gather over the next six weeks, we'll hear stories of Jesus life. On the heels of two baptisms, this seems the perfect time to open ourselves to Jesus' teachings with childlike wonder and curiosity!

Our keiki meet each Sunday with Kathy Matsuda for Godly Play stories before joining us in the sanctuary. It's a delight to invite them to sit at the table for Holy Communion, and so we are establishing the third Sunday of each month as "Keiki Sunday."

On Keiki Sunday, children are included in a special way. Seated with me, Deacon Lani, and Deacon-in-formation Jeanne, our keiki participate at the table, allowing them to see, up close, all parts of the sacred meal we share.

In addition, they get to see the faces of all their aunties and uncles who support them on their spiritual journeys. Lani, Jeanne, and I talk them through the service, explaining each step. Please know that as they participate, the children are absorbing and learning. They are not on display for us; this is their time to be folded into our church 'ohana in a meaningful way.

During baptism, we are asked, "Will you who witness these vows do all in your power to support this person in their life in Christ?"

We answer with a loud and affirming, "We will!" What an honor and joy it is to welcome our keiki to a life of sustaining faith, and what a privilege it is to meet them where they are and walk the path with them!

Blessings,

Vicar Jennifer +

EARTH DAY RESOURCE: HEALTHY SOIL FOR HEALTHY EARTH

Interfaith Power & Light offers a themed organizer’s kit for Faith Climate Action Week every year to support your efforts around Earth Day to engage your congregation in caring for Creation.

The theme of 2024’s Faith Climate Action Week is “Common Ground: Cultivating Connections between our Faith, our Food, and our Climate.” We’ll examine our responsibility to use agricultural practices that safeguard our Sacred Earth and how our faiths call us to respond with just solutions for all.

The kit will include a Guide with information on the faithful call to care for our soil through regenerative agriculture practices. Healthy soil is the basis of all life. Healthy soil provides food with all the nutrients we need for healthy bodies, and it draws more carbon pollution out of the atmosphere, helping to restore a healthy climate.

In the kit, there are suggested short films, an updated climate change fact sheet, faith-based discussion materials on faith and agriculture, and suggestions and resources for how to engage in supporting local action. It also includes postcards to gather signatures from the members of your congregation to pledge to vote with the climate in mind.
