MESSAGE FROM THE VICAR

Each of us is a crucial piece of the puzzle!

Dear St. Augustine's 'ohana,

What brings you joy? What talents, hobbies, and skills do you have that would help us complete the picture of our St. Augustine's 'ohana?

We are at our best when we're collaborating and sharing in the joy of being Christ's hands and heart in the world. It really does take a village! At St. Augustine's, we're looking for all the hidden talents among us. God calls us to be one body, unified. But that one body is made of many parts; each individual is a unique and necessary piece of the whole puzzle.

Whether you come to the 7:00 am or 9:00 am service or attend online, I invite you to consider telling us about the time and talent you can offer in this wonderful place called St. Augustine's Kohala. Forms are available online, in Walker Hall, and in the church. We plan to celebrate the beautiful abundance of our community on November 5, 2023!

Blessings,

Vicar Jennifer

THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO

  • Patsy Ching for cleaning the church and providing flowers this week.
  • John Sakai for serving as lay reader last Sunday.
  • St. Augustine's members who pray for others each week.
  • The many members of St. Augustine's and the community who help sort donations and operate the Thrift Shop.

KAHILI MAKING SEPTEMBER 9TH 9:30 AM TO 2:00 PM

Join us this Saturday in Walker Hall to make kahili for St. Augustine's Church with master feather workers. Potluck lunch to follow.

The group met August 26 and made great progress! To make the kahili, feathers are attached with thread to specially designed wire forms that have three prongs. After the feathers are on, each prong must be carefully wrapped with ribbon to cover the wire. So far, we have completed most of the feather work, with only a few left to attach. Next week, we'll be working hard on ribbon wrapping. Please join us!

COMMUNITY MEAL UPDATE

At our August meal, we served 300 meals of shoyu chicken and rice, thanks to the wonderful work of our volunteers. Mahalo to all who continue to assist with our Community Meal!

Please note that our next meal will be October 23. In September, we'll be hosting the St. Augustine's Annual Bazaar! This is our major fundraising effort, which allows the church to offer Sunday services, host music concerts and other community events, and offer activities for keiki throughout the year. The Bazaar also provides funds to maintain our beautiful and historic church, which has been a North Kohala landmark since it was built in 1884.

SHARING OUR TIME & TALENTS

What brings you joy? Perhaps you like to garden, cook, or organize things. Maybe you enjoy carpentry, reading to keiki, or sending greeting cards. Please consider sharing your talents at St. Augustine's!

COMPLETE YOUR GIVING FORM

Remember that all gifts of time and talent make a big difference in the life of our church and community. Please fill out the Time and Talents form for 2024. As you look through our list of ministry opportunities, you might be surprised at what sparks your interest.

As we plan for the coming year, your updated information will help so much! Forms are available in Walker Hall and on our website.

THE JOY OF GIVING

Every St. Augustine's member who turns in a Time & Talents Form will be entered into a drawing for a $25 donation, which can be gifted to a member of their 'ohana, a friend in need, Maui relief efforts, or another non-profit of their choice. We will have four drawings: September 10, September 24, October 8, and October 22.

PICTURED ABOVE - 2023 Vibrant Hawaii Art Fellows. Nicole Gomes is third from left (standing).

Congratulations to Nicole Gomes who was named a Vibrant Hawai'i Art Fellow for 2023. The fellowship is in partnership with a national initiative, One Nation One Project designed to support local artists in creating art that enhances collective well-being, celebrates diverse stories of home and culture, and builds community resilience from social cohesion.

Vibrant Hawai'i received over 100 applications for the Fellowship. Eleven Hawaiʻi Island artists were selected, representing each district of Hawaiʻi Island. These artists practice traditional arts, literary arts, performing arts, and visual arts. Nicole Gomes, master woodworker, was chosen to represent North Kohala. Congratulations Nicole, and we are looking forward to seeing your art!

If you have information to share, please let us know! This is a space to help us stay in touch in a variety of ways, such as news, offers of assistance, or garden bounty (fruits, veggies) you would like to share. Please email Vicar Jennifer or Kathy Webb: VicarJennifer@staugustineskohala.com or admin@staugustineskohala.com
