Art Teacher Inspires Student to Visit Art Institute of Chicago
Third grade students in Sally Runge’s Art class have been studying the works of French Artist Georges Seurat.
One student at Five Points Elementary was so inspired by this lesson, his family added a trip to the The Art Institute of Chicago on their agenda during a recent family trip.
Aydin Khan got to experience all the Art Institute of Chicago had to offer, as part of his family’s travels to Chicago, IL. Aydin saw Georges Seurat’s “A Sunday on La Grande,” noting each tiny dot Seurat used to make up the 10-foot-wide canvas, which allows the viewer to blend all the colors optically. This is a painting technique credited to Georges Seurat known as “Pointillism.”
“I love seeing students so excited over art and artists,” said Sally Runge Art Teacher at both Dennis and Five Points Elementary. “The importance of immersing children in the arts at a young age is so great!”
|
|
Upon returning to school, Aydin was able to share all that he saw and learned at the Art Institute of Chicago with his classmates.
“It is because of your art class that we are going to the Art Institute,” said Lisa Khan, Aydin’s Mother, in an email to Sally Runge. “Thank you once again for expanding (Aydin’s) arts’ horizon!”

Junior High Students Help Local Veterans with Service Project
After learning about a specific need in the community, Springboro Junior High students Ryan Hickey and Matthew Culler set out to create a service project to help local veterans. As part of their National Junior Honors Society project, the two 8th grade students organized a donation drive of personal hygiene products for the local Dayton VA Hospital.
|
|
The students called various community organizations to ask permission on allowing a donation box to be setup in their building. Once the boxes were placed, Ryan and Matthew coordinated efforts to solicit donations from the community, then scheduled the collection for the VA.
All total, the duo collected over 1,000 items for the VA at an estimated value of roughly $2,500. According to the VA, the items collected by the students will go to local veterans currently in the hospital or a rehabilitation center, allowing them to receive and use products that the veterans might not otherwise be able to access easily.
|
|
Both Ryan and Matthew stated how grateful they were to the community for their support in helping local veterans.

City of Springboro Mayor Agenbroad Visits Student Council at Five Points Elementary
Mayor John Agenbroad visited Five Points Elementary last week to swear in the school's newest Student Council members.
|
|
Mayor Agenbroad spoke to the twenty (20) members of the Five Points Student Council about leadership and his role in the Springboro community. The students asked the Mayor a variety of questions about his job and what it is like to be a leader.
At the conclusion of the visit, Mayor Agenbroad read the "Five Points Elementary Student Council Oath" to all members, as everyone was invited back to the lounge for donuts and juice.
Thank you City of Springboro, Mayor Agenbroad, and 5th Grade Teacher Beth Waldo for all your efforts in making this special event a memorable one today!

SHS Student Publishes Book
Springboro High School (SHS) Senior Elijah Rovito is now a published author! Elijah had been working on a novel since the 8th grade, and now his story, "The Sea Never Forgets," has been published and is available on Amazon.
Below is an excerpt from Elijah's novel, "The Sea Never Forgets:"
"Living a life on the sea isn't easy, lots of decisions are thrown our way. Thorn wants to do what is right for his crew, and do whatever he needs to do to keep them safe. What should he do when the best choice isn't the most lawful one? What if the lawful one endangers everything he calls home? What or who does he choose? In a thrilling adventure about decisions, family, loyalty, and humility follow Thorn and his crew as they try to find their place in a world that seems content with writing them out of existence."
Thank you to Sarah Lamoureux-Blevins, French Teacher at SHS, for sharing this fantastic news on one of her students whom she has had in class over the past five (5) years. Congratulations to Elijah Rovito for creating such talented work!

Student Health Services
District Nurse, Bronwyn Patterson, RN, BSN
Springboro Schools has a dedicated Student Health Services Web Page. Each of our schools has a Registered Nurse (RN) in the school clinic. Their goal is to promote health services and education for all students. Educational outcomes for students are impacted by physical, social, and emotional health, and our school nurses serve as liaisons between education and health care, linking the school, home, and community.
Healthy children make better students and better students make healthy communities. You can find all school health forms under the Student Health Forms Page, as well as parent guides and resources.
