INDIANA SOCCER

CLUB SOCCER DIRECTOR OF COACHING OF THE YEAR (2023)

We are so excited to announce that our very own Director of Coaching, Nick Swaim, was named the Indiana Club Youth Soccer Director of the Year at the Indiana Soccer League awards on Saturday, March 2, 2024.

Nick wasn't able to attend because he was traveling with a couple JI teams to a Dallas College Showcase so our Academy Director, Mis Mrak accepted on his behalf.

Nick has grown the club by over 40% in just 2 short years and continues to position JI as the premier club in northern Indiana. He's built an incredible network of coaches and managers that continue to make Jr. Irish Soccer Club the absolute best around. More importantly, Nick is dedicated to a child's positive experience beyond just his/her abilities on the pitch. He has implemented “give back” days that allow kids to serve and volunteer not only to help the club but also the community.

He is dedicated to advancing kids’ knowledge of the game through meaningful practice plans that

allow children to thrive when using skills in the game, at the appropriate moments.

Thank you Nick for working so hard for the many families and athletes involved with Jr. Irish!

SPRING IS HERE!

We've been working hard on schedules to get everything ready for your teams!

Nick, our Director of Coaching (DOC), shared each team's spring training schedule last November and managers are working hard to enter trainings and games (if not already done.) For those still in town over spring break, we will have small-sided, pick-up style games at the JI Fields (more details coming soon.) Watch social media for times and field locations. Game schedules are being confirmed and entered into SportsYou in the coming weeks.

The spring tournament schedule has been communicated so if necessary, your team managers will be setting up hotel blocks for stay-to-play tournaments. Please note that hotel blocks are not yet available for the Indiana Challenge Cup, President's Cup and State Cup tournaments yet. Those hotels are not released to us until the end of March at the earliest.

We are taking advantage of this spring like weather and working hard to get the fields ready for spring soccer action. Please note, with frequent and extended rain showers, we must close the fields at times to protect the grass. If we tear them up in training, we won't be able to use them for games so we appreciate your grace and patience if we need to cancel a training. Training is important so please do your best to attend and we'll work hard to keep the fields in the best possible shape for the spring.

Can't wait to see you on the fields!

Spring Coaching Focus

Throughout the spring, teams will be working on learning how to get

more numbers/players in the attack than the number of defenders

on the other team.

SPRING TRAINING REMINDERS:

A few reminders for families to help maximize training, keep our fields looking nice and keep families safe:

  • Please do not stand near your child's fields during training. It's intimidating to many kids when they are learning new techniques. Please stay at least 100 feet back from your kid's field or better yet, go for a walk and meet up when training's done.
  • If you are walking a dog during training, please make sure you stay to the perimeter of the fields and pick up all messes.
  • There is NO parking on Moreau Court. We've had several businesses complain as they are open 24 hours and use courier services that need full access to the street. We want to keep families and vehicles safe and our parking lots are plenty large enough. Thank you for your help!
  • If you are exercising during training, please be careful if you run/walk on the road or in the parking lots. There are many cars coming and going all evening.

Coach Corner

Meet Duane Ungethum! Coach Duane has been playing soccer for 38 years and is the JI universal goal keeper coach for all ages. He's been a coach for over 21 years and joined JI in 2008. Duane holds a USSF D coaching and a Goal Keeper level 2 license.

One of his favorite aspects of soccer is when "a kid shows up to keeper training on Monday after making a few monster saves over the weekend. They come in with smiles that are difficult to describe; but those smiles, and that excitement, are just about as good as it gets."

Duane and his wife, Lara, have two kids in the club (Lucy - 11 and Logan - 7) and enjoy traveling when not at the soccer fields on the weekends. They love to try new things and Duane is always up for a DIY project.

JI is lucky to have Duane's experience and expertise as a goal keeper coach!
