Volume 12 | April 2024

Its Spring at Glendale Farms

We have been busy filling the greenhouses and getting ready for the spring and summer planting seasons. Tim, Crystal and Amanda along with our extensive farm staff have most of the seedlings growing in the various sized pots. We are watering and fertilizing, filling orders for retailers and fund raising groups and thinking about all of the new colors and combinations that we created for the 2024 season. We think that you will be impressed by how beautiful and healthy our plants are. We have an experienced crew of growers here on the farm and thank our staff for their expert care with our plants.

This year, as in the past, we are offering a few different plant varieties along with customer favorites so that everyone will have great options for decorating their decks and porches, landscaping their gardens and giving great plants as gifts for Moms, Dads and for summer bbq hosts. We work to be sure that everyone has their favorite plants for the season and even like to throw in a few surprises as well. Gardeners, designers, homeowners, house guests and landscapers are sure to be happy with the selections that are available here at Glendale Farms.

Many of our plants will be ready for hanging up on your porch or deck when they leave the greenhouses. You can also make your own combinations, tuck them into your favorite planter and fill those garden spots with bursts of long-lasting color. Our plants are beautiful for window boxes and they make a nice container into great containers as well. We grow so that you can make colorful living additions to your homes and outside garden areas. There is no limit for creating a beautiful and colorful display of living plants that are grown locally.

We are currently open for retail during limited hours and welcome your calls or visits for orders. We will be open daily soon so look for us on Facebook and Instagram or give us a call if you want to know our hours. Remember, we accept cash and checks for payment (no cards). April Gardening Chores

Gardening Chores in Connecticut

  • Pull back mulch from perennials to allow the soil to warm up but be prepared to temporarily cover them if heavy frosts are predicted.

  • For an instant spring show, fill containers with purchased forced spring bulbs from supermarkets and garden centers.

  • Freezing temperatures don’t harm pansies, but if they are purchased directly from the greenhouse they should be gradually exposed to outdoor temperatures before planting.

  • Dead spots in the lawn can still be renovated in early April. Top dress bare areas with a mix of topsoil and compost, reseed, and keep moist until germination.

  • Prune early flowering shrubs such as forsythia after flowers have faded. Complete removal of diseased, weak, or crossing branches on shrubs and small trees.

  • Be sure to visit Glendale Farms now for pansies and limited spring flowers.

  • We accept cash and checks only.
