Spring Ferry Schedule & More

Dear Karen:

Spring is in the air and there is lots to share as the new season approaches.

Sayville Ferry Service Spring Schedules

Here are Sayville Ferry Service's Spring schedules starting Friday, March 15th through Wednesday, May 22nd.

Following up on last years changes, once again SFS is making the following two options available in the Late Spring schedule:

  • The last boat on Thursday evenings has once again been moved substantially later to 8:15PM to enable office commuters to leave Penn Station as late as 6:28PM and still get to their homes the same day.

  • The last boat on Friday evening has also been moved later in the evening to 9:15PM, once again to allow office commuters to work a full day and still make it in time to begin the weekend on a Friday evening rather having to wait until Saturday morning.

I am grateful for these later Thursday and Friday evening boats which will begin late April/early May. They are in direct response to the two most frequent requests I have received (among many others as well) over the past 3 ½ years.

Infested Tree Take Down – The Pines Conservation Society (PCS) in Collaboration with FIPPOA/The Pines Foundation (TPF)

Each year PCS, in collaboration with FIPPOA/TPF and the National Park Service (NPS), removes infested, dead, or dying trees from the Pines rights-of-way (ROW), defined as six feet on either side of a public walk. The program has helped combat the spread of environmentally dangerous southern pine beetles. The NPS reports that our rapid response and continued collaboration have been key in slowing it. The culling tactic has been a success. In 2016, the first year, 150 trees were downed.

The identified trees will be removed in early March by Bartlett Tree Experts. If you have dead or dying pine trees on the property that are outside of the ROW, now is an opportunity to work with Bartlett. Please contact Victor Montano, at vmontan0@bartlett.com, or on his cell which is 516-424-8635.

Pines Conservation Society - Annual Tree Sale

Spring is coming and it’s time to plant! Over the past many years, PCS has helped homeowners plant more than 4,000 trees. Tree planting is important to maintain the diversity of the Pine’s fragile ecosystem. Trees are purchased directly from the nursery and delivered to the Pines freight dock. By ordering in bulk, PCS passes the savings on to you.

This year, in addition to pine and oak trees they are offering two *new* starter pallets containing a mix of native pollinator plants and shrubs (see below), to encourage owners to plant native as strongly recommended at last fall's Go Native discussion and tour.

Please click here to order your trees and plants.

A special thank you to the PCS Board of Directors and the many hard working community volunteers.

When Does It Open?

I get this question a lot, particularly this time of the year. Here are a few answers, and as is always advised, please call or check relevant websites for updates and changes.

The Pines Liquor Shop: opens Saturday, March 16th (11AM - 3PM) and the weekend beginning Friday, March 22nd (11AM-4PM) and Saturday March 23rd (11AM - 5PM). Check for additional days and hours on their website.

The Pines Pantry: please refer to their website for opening information.

Pines Pizza and Sip n' Twirl will be open starting on April 5th. The full calendar of openings can be found here.

Weekly household garbage curbside pickup has resumed on Mondays through March, with bulk/recyclables on Wednesdays. Thursday household garbage pickup starts April 4th. The full garbage collection calendar and guidelines can be found here. I strongly encourage you to notify carting@brownieny.com with a copy to 311@fippoa.org if a pickup was missed.

Please save the date, Saturday, May 18th for our annual community meeting.

Looking forward to seeing you all as you return for the '24 season.
