SPRING 2024

“On that day a fountain shall be opened…” - Zechariah 13:1

Over the past couple of weeks, I was given an opportunity to slow down, look around, recover, and reflect a bit on where I’ve been as well to consider some possible new way/s ahead. The regional board and staff have been kind to support this type of endeavor.  I think many can relate how easy it can be to become swept up into a schedule that can dehumanize ones sense of self.  I have been reading: In Praise of Slowness by Carl Honoré. He quotes, Milan Condera’s 1996 Novela on Slowness, “When things happen too fast nobody can be certain about anything, anything at all, not even, about (their) self.” Carl Honoré does not attempt an argument against our advance/s brought on by hard work. Although, he argues that much can be missed when we speed everything up. It is hard not to live with a sense that everything around us, our society, organizations, people and even, churches are moving faster. What do you think?  Continue Reading

On April 14th, the PSWR Korean Disciples Convocation was held at the Church of Foothills. The event started with a dinner at 5 PM, followed by a worship service and a seminar. The seminar primarily addressed mental health issues and depression, focusing on Korean immigrants. The first speaker, Rev. Peter (Hyocheol) Kim (Good Life Care Resource Center), discussed the mental health challenges faced by many Korean immigrants and highlighted the critical role churches should play in providing more support and care for these individuals. The second speaker, Rev. Dr. Geun Hee Ryu (Former Executive Pastor of NAPAD), explored the topics of depression and depressive disorders. He noted that a surprising number of Korean pastors and their spouses exhibit signs of depression, emphasizing the importance of pastors and their spouses caring for their own physical and mental health every day. Meanwhile, Korean youths had a regular gathering and enjoyed a time of fellowship during the seminar.

The Regional Nominating Committee Needs Your Help!

The Regional Nominating Committee has begun its work, serving as a conduit of God’s call to people all across the Pacific Southwest Region. We have a sincere desire to increase the number of congregations that have someone involved in our Regional ministries, that is, volunteering with a committee, etc. The more churches we have involved, the stronger our Regional church can be.

It is important that the full breadth of diversity within our Region is reflected in those planning and carrying out our ministries. We need your help! We don’t want to stick to inviting the people we already know or the ones who’ve been doing the work for years. But we don’t know who we don’t know. That’s where you come in! Please use this Google form to put us in contact with the people in your congregation who could be a blessing to our Regional church.

And remember, this blessing is mutual! Having members of your church involved in our Regional ministries strengthens your congregation as well.

Thank you for your help! If you have questions, you can contact Regional Nominating Committee Chair Rev. Rebecca Littlejohn at revrlittlejohn@gmail.com.

GENERAL NEWS AND RESOURCES

"Restore and Rewind" - Pentecost Offering

Sundays May 12 & 19

When it comes to church, we have a lot of negative tapes playing in our heads:

“Church is judgmental.”

“Church is hypocritical.”

“They think they’re better than everyone else.”

It’s time for restoration. Time to rewind the tape.

To view church as a place of generosity and justice. Church as a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world.

Your gifts to the Pentecost Offering, received in most congregations on May 12 and 19, are divided between your region, which supports local new faith communities, and New Church Ministry, which trains, equips, and assists emerging leaders to be “movement initiators.”

We believe God calls the Pacific Southwest Region to be a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world.

OUR VISION, to be a faithful, growing church that demonstrates true community, deep Christian spirituality and passion for justice (Micah 6:8); and,

OUR MISSION, to be and to share the Good News of Jesus Christ, witnessing, loving and serving from our doorsteps "to the ends of the earth". (Acts 1:8)
