More than 75 Attend Spring Conference and Spring Fling

More than 75 family physicians, family medicine residents, and medical students joined us in Flowood for MAFP's Spring Conference April 12-14. The conference featured CME, workshops, social events and almost 35 exhibitors. The CME sessions were held Saturday and Sunday morning. Highlighting the conference was the Saturday night social by the pool at the Sheraton.

The MAFP Board of Directors and MAFP Foundation Board of Trustees enjoyed a night at Trustmark Park on Friday evening as the Braves took on the Biloxi Shuckers. Both boards also met during the weekend to plan for future events and discuss issues. MAFP hosted collaboration meetings among Mississippi family medicine residency program coordinators. This has turned out to be a great networking group.

Advocacy Update

Last week, Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann and Speaker Jason White agreed to meet publicly to discuss Medicaid expansion. Both chambers have differing visions for Medicaid, leaving many to wonder what the final product of a Medicaid expansion bill will look like.

One issue that will be discussed during a conference committee meeting is the possibility of a state-based health insurance exchange. HB 1647 would move Mississippi away from the federal exchange established through the Affordable Care Act and create a state exchange. The exchange would be operated by the state of Mississippi, with rates developed by an independent actuarial firm that is determined by a regulatory board. The Mississippi Department of Insurance estimated that the state could save between $137-$196 million over five years by switching to a state-based exchange.

Mississippi has the 4th highest incidence of laryngeal cancer in the U.S. Early symptoms are often attributed to other common symptoms of a cold, sore throat or benign neck mass. Primary care physicians are the front line of early cancer detection.
