Requesting Volunteers for Points 4th of July Committee

Hello Points Neighbors,

This year our community celebrates our 49th Points 4th of July festivities. We honor those of you who’ve organized the events and made yearly trips down the parade route over the decades and extend a warm welcome to friends and neighbors who are new. This nearly fifty-year tradition could not happen without all of you, and we thank you!

Please see the attached schedule of events which are funded wholly by neighborhood donations. We request a household donation of $250 to keep the party alive next year. And while your donations support the food, beverages, entertainment, permitting, insurance and sanitation support we need to keep going into our fiftieth year, it is the additional gift of your presence that truly makes these gatherings a party. So, please, click on the SignUpGenius to volunteer:

Oaths of Office for Councilmembers:

 Steve Bush and Michael Hyman

At the January Council meeting, newly elected Councilmembers Steve Bush and Michael Hyman were sworn in. We welcome and thank for their service to the Town.

Michael Hyman

Like many of us in the tech industry, I became a Pacific Northwest local when I moved to the region in the 80s to work for Microsoft. I have been an executive at many of the area’s leading companies as well as a successful serial entrepreneur.

I am currently a Vice President at the world’s most pet friendly company. I’ve served on the board of two area arts organizations, and now want to get involved with my city. Yarrow Point has a unique feel, being a small town near much larger cities, and I want to work with the Mayor and other council members to preserve its character, including its sense of safety, the nesting bald eagles and greenery, and our 4th of July parade. I won’t put up ugly signs, but I do circumnavigate the city most days and look forward to meeting you.

Steve Bush

My name is Steve Bush and I am a resident of Yarrow Point. After the successful sale of Pure Networks, a technology startup I co-founded, our family moved to Yarrow Point in May 2010. I live with my wife Christine Chang, two teenage daughters, and pet Golden Retrievers at the intersection of Yarrow Point, Clyde Hill, and Kirkland town boundaries. In 2013, I decided to leave the workforce and dedicate my time, energy, and resources to family and community impacting projects.

Juanita Loder

Ferry Boat at Road End Beach

Dock at Road End Beach

Our neighbor Juanita Loder passed away recently. She was a lifelong resident of Yarrow Point. She was 99 years 8 months old when she left her home on 92nd to her two sons John and Bill. John provided the Town with some history shared here.

The attached document was written a decade ago when Juanita’s husband Dick Loder passed. The original property Juanita lived on with her Mother Maude Lucinda Rice Beebe is now 4433 94th. However the address was different back then.

George Hiram Beebe married Maude Lucinda Rice in 1920. They divorced around 1925; he moved back to Minnesota and never returned. Gramma Beebe raised Juanita by herself working as a Barber in Seattle and a Sheet Metal worker at Boeing during the war. Gramma Beebe and my Mother Juanita both took the Ferry, the S.S. Ariel, from the swimming dock at the end of the Point to Seattle to work for many years. There was no Bridge at that time. She fished off that dock many times, for dinner for herself and her mother.

Please read the attached for more Yarrow Point history embedded in the Loder’s story. Thank you John for providing this and the pictures!

History on Juanita Loder

SR 520 WB Off-ramp to 92nd Ave Improvements

WSDOT is working with the Town to make improvements to the safety of the exit from 520 onto the roundabout. We are working with them to improve the unsafe and frustrating traffic congestion on the Kiss-n-Cry affecting residents as well.

Reminder: Scoop Dog Poop and Put it in Town Provided Trash Bins

This is a friendly reminder to please pick up after your dog and use the Town provided trash bins for waste and not private residential cans. There are four locations: 92nd Ave @ 40th St, Road End Beach, Town Hall on 95th and Sally's Alley. Thank you!

Planning Commission Topic Updates:

Middle Housing, Comprehensive Plan and Private Property Tree Code

Middle Housing

The Town will hold an Informational Open House on May 29th from 6-8pm at Town Hall.

A survey asking for your feedback will be launched during the Open House. The survey will be available through our website and at Town Hall.

Please visit the Town's middle housing webpage for more information and periodic updates: https://yarrowpointwa.gov/middle-housing/

Comprehensive Plan Update

Since spring of 2023, the Town has been working on updating its comprehensive plan. A full draft will be included in the Town Council packet at their June meeting and on the Town's Website at that time.

A public hearing is anticipated in September for the Comprehensive Plan. Please visit the Town's comprehensive plan webpage for more information: https://yarrowpointwa.gov/comprehensive-plan/

Tree Code

The Planning Commission has worked fervently to update the existing code and has recommended those updates to Council. After lengthy discussion, the Council pinpointed items in the proposed code that they believe need additional discussion/revisions. Staff will take those comments into consideration and bring a revised draft back to the June meeting for further consideration. To follow the latest updates, we recommend reading the meeting packet materials found on our website, joining our email list by emailing townhall@yarrowpointwa.gov and attending the public hearing at the next Council Meeting June 11th.

Park Board Community Clean Up Day

Thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers who attended our April 21st Community Day! The Park Board and volunteers removed invasive species in Morningside Park, beautified landscaped areas, and pressure washed Road End Beach.

We share our gratitude for: Krista Fleming, Brian Fleming, Carolyn Whittlesey, Art Whittlsey, Nancy Daltas, Bridger Core, Charlene Che, Li Che, Amy Pellgrini, Jeff Pellegrini, Cole Pellegrini, Doug Waddell, Dicker Cahill, Julie Lynch and kids, Margot Schwartz, Ronni McGlenn, John McGlenn, Jim Bugbee, Laurie Bugbee, Austen Wilcox, Jason Smith and Preston.

Meet Cory, the Town's Postman!

Hello,

My name is Cory and I have been your mailman since 2016. I began my career with the Post Office in 2007 working different routes throughout Bellevue. I made “Regular” in 2014 when I got my own “Route” which was a group of five different routes where I worked those routes when their Regular’s had their days off. This Route, 412, opened up in 2016 and I successfully bid on it. This Route has the highest mail volume in the office and is in the top three in package volume. I really enjoy being out in the elements and walk anywhere from 6 to 13 miles a day.

Our office starts at 7:00am and they try to limit us to 12 hours although I have worked up to 17 hours in a day and over 103 hours in a week. Two years ago they were asking for volunteers to go to other offices so I was able to carry mail, after doing this Route or on my days off, in Maple Valley, Renton, Redmond, Issaquah, Bothell, Mill Creek and Lynnwood. While I enjoy seeing new neighborhoods and experiencing new challenges nothing compares with my home, Yarrow Point.

Personally I have been married for over 30 years. I have two children and two grandchildren. My son has his own business doing graphic design and plays bass guitar for Sunny Day Real Estate. My daughter does environmental impact analysis for WSDOT. My wife is retired after 40 years in the restaurant industry which is where I met her. In my free time I enjoy studying history along with working in the yard and watching movies with a preference for film noir, war, westerns and classics. I also enjoy hiking and photography.

Drones
