David Winston Honored by ABC at Expo West! |
The American Botanical Council (ABC) awarded its 2024 Mark Blumenthal Herbal Community Builder Award to David Winston, RH (AHG), founder and president of Herbalist & Alchemist (H&A), and dean of David Winston’s Center for Herbal Studies at the 19th annual ABC Celebration and Botanical Excellence Awards Ceremony on March 13, 2024, held in conjunction with Expo West in Anaheim, California.
This award is given annually to individuals who have played a significant role in creating a sense of connection and community among herbalists, botanical researchers, members of the herb and natural products communities and industries, and others who work with medicinal and aromatic plants.
On returning from Anaheim, David said,
“I was wonderfully surprised and honored to be the recipient of the 2024 American Botanical Council's Mark Blumenthal Herbal Community Builder Award. This prestigious award was first given to visionary herbalist Rosemary Gladstar over 10 years ago and I am thrilled to be in such good company. The award is a recognition of people who have contributed to the American and worldwide herbal renaissance of the last 50 years. I have been fortunate to be a part of this through my 50 + years of teaching, writing, committee work (AHG, AHPA, ABC) and practicing as a clinical herbalist and helping to create the wonderful herbal community we share today.”

We also asked David about the Expo/AHPA Herb Walk:
“The AHPA herb walk was, as always, a highlight of Expo West. Held at the Fullerton Arboretum, Erin Smith and I led one walk, while Roy Upton and Feather Jones led the other. Each group was well attended with enthusiastic participants eager to spend some time in nature before the overwhelming busyness and hectic days of Expo. We spent several hours looking at and talking about Roses, Lavender, bitter and sweet Oranges, Feverfew, Dandelion, California Poppy, Horehound, Calendula, Wild Lettuce, Rosemary, as well as many other edible and medicinal plants found at the arboretum.”

History of Herb & Supplement Regulation
AHPA created a wonderful video about the history of one of the main laws that regulates herbs and supplements, DSHEA (Dietary Supplements Health & Education Act), with interviews of people involved in writing and passing the bill. It also conveys very well the environment that made it necessary for the industry to have that protection.

Musculoskeletal System Support Blog...
The term “musculoskeletal system” (MS) might sound like a less than exciting topic, but without a healthy MS system you cannot breathe, walk, move, or easily function without pain or paralysis. The musculoskeletal system gives your body its structure and support, and enables us to move, breathe, return blood from our periphery, cough, chew, and other essential bodily functions. It is made up of bones, muscles and joints, along with cartilage, tendons, ligaments, and connective tissue (fascia).

Our Green Team at Local Earth Day Clean Up!
|
The H&A Green Team (and a junior!) joined up with over 200 volunteers with the Musconetcong Watershed Association for the annual riverside cleanup event. We braved the blustery weather and cleared litter from the local waterways, parks, and paths. An excellent day spent in good company and a stark reminder of how much impact one piece of trash can have on local ecosystems.
In honor of EarthDay2024, we are also continuing our support of four incredible local orgs working to preserve & restore NJ’s land & water 🌎
