Getting into the spirit!
Our hearts are full year round, but especially near the holidays when we take more time to reflect on the year and all of the love and support we have received. That generosity allows us to give our animals their second chances. Thank you for believing in our mission of "improving the lives of cats and dogs through adoption and community partnerships"; our work is possible because of you.

Our dedicated staff does everything they can to ensure every animal is safe, comfortable and well taken care of until their new family has been found. Here they are, getting in the holiday spirit!

While we search for their forever homes, our animals receive:

  • medical care, vaccines, microchips and medications
  • a safe and warm place to rest as they wait for their new families
  • a second chance filled with safety, love, and compassion
  • nutritious food, snacks, love and enrichment play

To join our rescue family and make a contribution in this Season of Giving, you can donate online here or mail a check to HBPets PO Box 8 McMinnville, OR 97128 (memo: Season of Giving).

We will always be grateful for your love and support.

We Believed in Him!
Knowing that we can add a happy ending to the often tragic stories that our animals have experienced gives us the fuel to keep going day after day. This beautiful boy is a very lucky dog and we would like to share his story with you. Rio arrived at our shelter in the summer of 2021 because his owners decided that they no longer had enough time to give him the love and attention he deserved.

Quickly, we found out that he was a very sweet, funny and intelligent boy who loved to play fetch! Well then, why did he live at our shelter for over a year? Rio came to us with extreme dog aggression and anxiety which made it unsafe for us to find his forever family.

To help him feel a bit more secure, Rio received constant one-on-one attention. Each day, we stood outside in the blazing sun, surrounded with red-smoke-filled skies, throwing tennis balls for him and letting him cool off in a kiddie pool. Winter arrived and we continued his private playtime as were knee-deep in snow.

For an entire year, our staff tried relentlessly and incredibly creatively to help him feel more comfortable with dogs, but poor Rio just couldn't leave his trauma-based behaviors in the past.
Here's where the story gets a makeover!
Local dog trainer, Martin Pierce offered to bring Rio on a rehabilitation journey at his training center to help him leave behind his fears and gain confidence. Marvin enjoys working with some of the longest residents at local shelters to give them their best shot at finding a good home.

After just a few days working with Marvin, Rio is successfully interacting with other dogs off leash! He loved running on the treadmill to get rid of excess energy and even lost 6 pounds. What a good boy, Rio! Check out Rio's training adventure here. Soon after, Rio was adopted by a loving family and he is living out his retirement years in a safe, fun, and compassionate environment.

We are so grateful for the lifechanging service that Marvin and his staff are willing to provide our animals, especially the ones who need some extra help with manners.
By the numbers...
We will be tallying our 2022 statistics in January, but check out the impact we had in 2021 for animals in our community. We mean it when we say our organization operates because of generous individuals and businesses in our community and beyond.

Your gifts have allowed us to do our jobs every day so that the animals who arrive at our shelter are giving everything they need for the best opportunity for a second chance at a life filled with love, compassion and safety.

Thanks to our small and dedicated staff and volunteer team, we were able to provide services to 11,063 dogs and cats including:

  • a warm and safe place to rest as they waited for new families
  • offered a ticket home for lost pets through licensing and microchips
  • medical and dental services (surgery, bloodwork, medication, and vaccines)
  • spay/neuter surgeries (almost 14,000 since 2017!)
  • reuniting lost dogs with their families through Dog Control

We are looking forward to 2023 and the huge difference we can make for so many deserving animals because of your generosity and kindness.

Homeward Bound Pets Humane Society is an independent, 501 (c)(3) non-profit. We do not receive large grants from national or regional organizations, so we rely solely on YOU. Every animal that comes to our shelter stays with us until they are adopted.

We believe that each animal has unique qualities that someone is looking for in a companion and that time increases the chances of them finding each other. We are honored to do this work.
