Discover Wellness Walk Engaged Milwaukee around Mental Health & Wellness

The Discover Wellness Walk on May 18 was attended by folks of all ages, from toddlers to elderly folks, in Milwaukee’s Cathedral Square Park.

One father and daughter duo expressed how much they appreciated the event, as they rode the city bus to the park and decided to stop by and see what was going on. They ended up using the wellness passport and visiting every activity station, and said that the MKE County Park Map scavenger hunt and rock painting was their favorite. Overall they were very grateful for the family-friendly nature of being able to talk about mental health out in the open.

The Discover Wellness Walk was part of a Wellness Event Series to mark Mental Health Awareness Month, May 2024, supported by SPF-PFS-19 funding.

Partners included I Am Chronically Resilient, The Village, Community Advocates Public Policy Institute, RISE Drug Free MKE, Froedtert & Medical College of Wisconsin, Wauwatosa Health Department, Escucha Tus Emociones, and Milwaukee County Parks.

"The personal highlight for me was seeing the diversity in participants, and particularly having young moms thanking me for having these resources available," said Cecilia Tenorio, Community Advocates Public Policy Institute’s Mental Health and Wellness Coordinator. "People lit up when they realized everything was free, and we got a lot of compliments on the Be Kind To Yourself totes and mental health handouts from Mental Health of America and 988. The bubble station from Wauwatosa Health Department was a huge hit and helped attract families with littles to the event. I loved seeing community members from different ages, races, and parts of the city engage with one another."

Discover Wellness Mental Health Month Series

During May, community partners around Milwaukee County are offering a variety of family-friendly events to support mental wellness. Each event, supported by SPF-PFS-19 funding, will feature rock painting, giveaways, raffles, entry into a drawing for a bike package, and resources.

MIAD Students Utilized Their Creativity to Support Tobacco-Free Campuses

MIAD student support staff decided to get creative this semester with their SPARK grant funding that helps college campuses pass tobacco-free policies and educate campus communities that tobacco in all its forms is a threat. Student support staff, instructors, and community partners including the City of Milwaukee Tobacco-Free Alliance worked to create a poster contest for illustration students so that student voices could be heard loud and clear in this project.

There were 118 submissions from students across multiple illustration classes for these three categories: Wisconsin Quitline information posters, PrideFest Smoke-Free area signage, and Milwaukee Riverkeeper community cleanup posters. Community input was used to select first, second, and third places in each category along with honorable mentions.

To celebrate the work done by the students, the posters were on display in the student union and the winners for each category were announced. Through the partnership with the City of Milwaukee Tobacco-Free Alliance, winners were awarded a cash prize as their work will be used in the community.

Pride Fest poster winners: 1st Audra Klotka, 2nd Joelle Turner, 3rd Paige Cosico. Wisconsin Quitline poster winners: 1st Arden Schroeder, 2nd McKenzie Schewe, 3rd Makayla Ryan. Milwaukee Riverkeeper Community Cleanup: 1st Parker Deutsch, 2nd Ivy Greeley, 3rd Andrea Robleto.
