October Mixed Doubles Round Robin
A really beautiful Fall day on October 23rd led to another great round robin tennis event. This one was mixed doubles, with 20 players, ten of each sex, participating on 5 courts. We even had some of the players dancing to the music of the nearby witches caravan fundraiser (and some complaining about the distraction, of course). The ladies winner was Carol Scott. Tied for 2nd were Janet Padilla, Denise Studt, and Lisa Toomey, with Lisa winning the prize in a tiebreaker (the other two had gone home by then). On the men’s side, the winner was Scott Dotson, coming from behind to beat Dave McNamara, who finished 2nd. Good time was had by all, with a good group of observers cheering on the players.

Jimmies
The Jimmies ruined the Bombers chances of an undefeated season by sweeping them last Tuesday by scores of 22-16 and 15-13. The league leading Bombers came into Tuesday’s games with a record of 14-0 and appeared to underestimate the 3rd place Jimmies. Outhitting the Bombers, 33 hits to 22 hits, was key as the Jimmies enjoyed their best offensive output of the season. Leading the way with 4 hits each were Craig Errington, Tommy Boggs, and Jay Cole. Defensively the Jimmies played error free ball backing up a strong pitching performance by Roger Albizu who gave up only one run in the last three innings. In the second game, the Jimmies were leading by 7 runs in the top of the 7th inning. They took the field with confidence that the game was in hand and needed only three outs to end the game. However, the Bombers proceeded to score 5 runs before their rally was thwarted. Merl Baldwin pitched the win and got a critical strikeout and popup to the catcher in the final inning. The Jimmies’ defense continued to shine committing only one error. Offensively, the Jimmies collected 24 hits led by Jay Cole, Rodney Mull, and Mark Bradcovich with 3 apiece. With the two wins, the Jimmies remain in third place with a 11-5 record with one double header left against the Bandits. If Jimmies sweep the Bandits next Tuesday and the Bombers sweep Coastal Tire, the Jimmies will finish the regular season in 2nd place. The critical doubleheader against the Bandits will be played at Smithville Park.

ROLL YOUR BALL
Roll, roll, roll your ball gently down the lane, and merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily the pins will fall agane (and agane). Four in a row, five in a row, seven, eight, and yes, even nine in a row. Resistance was futile. And after all the dirt and oil on the lanes had settled, there had been a 267 game, a 257, another 257, a 244, a 230, a 228, etc, etc. Five 600 series were bowled, and team Nor’easters had set league season high scratch game and scratch series totals, and narrowly missed rolling a 1000 hdcp game. Three teams bowled shutouts, and ten of the twelve teams changed positions in the standings. The DFL Eagles, led by Frank Zell-611(267) soared high once again, shut out the first place X-Men and broke out of last place. The Pocket Pounders continued to hammer their opponents, shutting out the Pin Tails and took over first place. The Express, led by Doug Voegtlin-643(230,257) got rolling again and took three of four to move back into a tie for first place. And the Nor’easters, with Ray Cook-627(244,214) and Ron Hawkins-600(228) blowing strong, shutout second place Livin’ On A Spare. Other top scores from last week were bowled by Bret Sigillo-634(257), David Matthews-586(203,203), Jack D’Ambrosio-574(202), Joe Stiene-562(213), Rich Wantuck-557, Dave Connally-535(211), and Steve Timmermann-511.

With two thirds of the St. James Bocce league season complete, there was no change in the standings:
This Sunday saw Roll On captained by Ed Boyers take on DeBoccery led by Wayne Dennis. In a closely fought match, Roll On prevailed 5-4. Sue Boyers, Rob McKinley and Dan Diehl won 2 of 3 on Court #1 for Roll On, while Keith Charlesworth, Dennis Falkenstein and Phyllis Falkenstein also won 2 of 3 on Court #2 for Roll On. In the second match of the day, first place Bocce Blaster led by Nat Scaccianoce took on Jerry Klawitter’s Rolling Thunder. A close match saw Bocce Blasters win 5-4. For Bocce Blasters, Marcia Leeds and Bob Paterson took 2 of 3 on Court #1, while Captain Nat and Paul Tracy won 2 of 3 on Court #3. With 6 weeks of the season complete and 3 to go, the standings for the Golden Ball (awarded to the top bowler in the regular season) show these competitors to be on top:

Week of 11/3/22
Tuesday brought some much needed breezes after two weeks of very calm racing. RO Harry Howard set a very challenging course which took advantage of the weather. The day’s racing had 11 Nirvanas and 9 Dragon 95s starting out. Mark Hamer had one win, Dick Denzler had two and Charlie Sweeney had three in the Nirvana class. The Dragons really enjoyed the breeze with Mark Hamer taking a win, Dick Denzler one and Charlie Sweeney with four.
Thursday again had a nice but vacillating wind making for challenges in tacking and riding the broad reaches. The Nirvanas had thirteen starters, which made clear sailing very difficult. There were numerous bumps and fouls all day. Ken Bates, Harry Howard, Harri Beutler and Mark Hamer each had a win with Charlie S. taking three. The Dragon fleet had eight racers starting with the wins split between Dick D. (4) and Charlie S. (2).
