St. James Team Wins 3rd Place at Nationals

The St. James 3.5 Men’s team, captained by Rod Payne, captured 3rd place in the 7.0 Men’s 55 and Over 2022 USTA League National Championships held October 14-16 in Orlando, Florida. Representing the Southern Section, the team defeated sectional champions from the Mid-Atlantic, Pacific Northwest, Eastern and Midwest Sections in pool play on Friday and Saturday to secure a spot in the Final Four.

On Sunday in the semi-finals they first played and lost to the top seeded Southern California team, which went on the capture the national title. With that loss, the team then played New England, who lost to Texas in the other semi-final match. Playing their sixth match in three days, the team prevailed 2-1 to finish the tournament 5-1 and in 3rd place.

The final match came down to two third set tiebreakers, played by Ted Wesson and Gary Milner who won 7-6, 2-6, 1-0; and Jerry Klawitter and Mike Holstein who won 6-4, 4-6, 1-0. Both partnerships won five of their six matches during the event. Throughout the event every match was extremely close, as evidenced by the fact that the team played eight set or match tiebreakers, winning six of them. Rounding out the eight team members who competed were co-captain Jim Parker, Dan Hicks, Chris Mayer and Tee Tillman.

Members of the team who did not travel to Florida are Dave Filios, Mike Osborn and Dave Portney. The team went 14-0 during the regular season before winning the NC State Championship in June and the Southern Sectional Championship in September.

Team Members from left to right: Jim Parker, Jerry Klawitter, Chris Mayer, Tee Tillman, Rod Payne, Gary Milner, Dan Hicks, Ted Wesson and Mike Holstein

USTA 6.5 65+ League Champs

Back Row: Ed Mesmer, Steve Zaharuk (Captain), Dave Martin, Jim Alleborn, Steve McNabb, Mark LeFevre, John Summerville, Larry Rogers

Front Row: Tony Reda, Fred Spielberger, Craig MacPherson (Co-Captain), Bill Kamszik, Tom Grillo

Not in Picture: Dave Portney and Ihor Zyga

The St. James Men’s USTA 65 and over 6.5 Combo Team repeated as league champions for the second straight year and did it in dramatic fashion. In early September the team had a record of 2 wins and 4 losses and had lost 4 straight matches. But this team never gave up winning 4 out of their last 5 matches including the last 3 in a row to edge out a tough Compass Pointe Team and retain their league championship. The team will play in the State Tournament being held in Wilmington November 3rd thru 6th. Hopefully some of the matches will be played here at St. James with the Founders bleachers full of SJTA members cheering them on.

Captain Holly Robinson said “The Divorce Court team was formed to enable 7 couples to play USTA Tennis together with our spouses in competition, never expecting to have such incredible fun, winning the Southeast NC Tennis League and making it to the State Tournament in Asheville. We finished the season 7-1, and our entire team of 15 attended our State Tournament in Asheville in September with a 2-2 record.”

October Men's Round Robin Results

It was an absolutely beautiful evening for the Men's Round Robin. We had 20 participants and everyone had a great time and no new injuries to report.

John Summerville was the champion winning 19 games. Mike Miller was the silver medalist winning 17 games.  A special thank you to 'Ohio State' Tim and Karen O'Connor for organizing and tracking scoring in Tom Miller's absence.

October Women's Round Robin Results

Congratulations to the winner of October's ladies round robin, Ange Urlaub. There was a tie for second place between Claudia Barnett and Renee Schafer. Thanks to all who participated in our fun afternoon of tennis. The next round robin for the ladies will be November 6th from 1-3PM.

Success on the Courts

The following, listed below, are the St. James USTA Teams who have won championships thus far in 2022. Remember that the Mixed and Combo 2022 seasons are still in progress and there may be more trophies coming this way. The Combo State tournament will held November 3rd-6th. Good luck to all those participating. Congratulations to all the members of these teams.

Jimmies

The Jimmies hopes of finishing atop the “A” Division were extinguished Tuesday as they fell twice to Coastal Tire, 16-10 and 13-5. Lack of run production and defensive errors plagued the Jimmies again in both disappointing losses. With a 9-5 record, they have a 4-game lead on the fourth-place Bandits who own a 5-9 record. Now, their goal for the remainder of the season is to avoid dropping to fourth place and a possible match up with the 14-0 Bombers to open the league tournament. Leaders in the first game with 2 hits each were Rob DeBuse, Rodney Mull, and Kevin Lynch. Dave Simco, Charlie Brown, and Joe Ferrera paced the Jimmies offense in the second game with 2 hits apiece. It doesn’t get any easier for the Jimmies as they face the league leading Bombers next Tuesday at Ocean Isle Park.
