USTA 65+ Men’s 3.5 South East Tennis League

Repeat Champions

The Holstein/Payne team from St. James Plantation is the South East Tennis League champion for the second year in a row. They will travel to Greenville, NC in mid-May to compete in the North Carolina 65+ State Championship. The team started the season 1-3 with one loss to Compass Pointe and two losses to Ogden Park. The team then won 8 consecutive matches to finish with a

record of 9-3. For the season the team was 25-11 in terms of individual wins and won 62% of its games.

St. James Men's Softball

Jimmies Softball

The Jimmies dropped another pair of games Tuesday as they fell to the undefeated TLC team twice. They lost in the first game 8 to 3 as their bats remained on “Spring Break”. It’s the second week in a row that the offense has been sluggish and unable to produce runs. A late game rally in the second game looked promising for the Jimmies. Down 9-7 with two out and the bases loaded, Jay Cole hit a screaming line drive that was snagged by the first baseman to end the game. One bright spot on offense was Joe Ferrera’s hot hitting as he led the team with 3 timely hits. The Jimmies’ record falls to 6 wins

and 4 losses which puts them in 4th place in the “A” Division. Next Tuesday the 3 and 7 Humana team will visit Smithville and should provide an opportunity for the Jimmies to get back on track.

Jimmies’ Spring Schedule

(Double-headers will be played each date, beginning at 9:00)

2 May, vs Humana, at Smithville Park

9 May, vs Coastal Tire, at Shallotte Park

16 May, vs TLC, at Shallotte Park

23 May, vs Copperheads, at Ocean Isle Beach Park

30 May, vs Dragons, at Cedar Grove Middle School

6 Jun, vs Coastal Tire, at Smithville Park

13 Jun, vs Bombers, at Smithville Park

20 Jun, vs Winding River, at Smithville Park

27 Jun, League Playoffs at Ocean Isle Beach Park

Gators Softball

The Gators lost both games of their Tuesday double-header to Coastal Tire. Both games were close

throughout but a breakout inning by Coastal Tire in both games spelled the difference. After leading the entire first game the Gators lost in the final inning by a score of 16-14. For this game the offense was provided by John Neal, Randy Kraemer, Tony Pace and Greg Patterson who all got 3 hits in 4 at bats. In the second game the Gators trailed for just about the entire game then a strong 7th inning by Coastal Tire put the game out of reach. The Gators lost this one by a score of 22-16. Offense in the second game was provided by Randy Kraemer and Greg Patterson, who both had home runs, while Tony Pace once again got 3 hits in 4 at bats. Next up for the Gators is the perennial powerhouse team, the Bombers, which we will play next Tuesday at Cedar Grove Park.

St. James Model Yacht Racing Club

Tuesday April 25

A great day for sailing with temperature around 70F and winds from the WNW at 8-12k. RO Steve

Stopa laid out a course that took best advantage of the perfect sailing weather. FIFTEEN Nirvana boats started the day. Dick Denzler dominated the Nirvana races, with four wins and two 2nds . Charlie Sweeney had one win, a 2nd and a 3rd. Harry Howard had one win. Garrett VanKoughnett had two 2nds and a 3rd. Peter Flynn had one 2nd. Ken Bates had two 3rds and Mark Hamer and Kevin Richter each had one 3rd.

EIGHT DF95 Skippers also enjoyed Steve’s course. Dick Denzler again dominated the day with three wins and three 2nds. Charlie Sweeney had one win and three 2nds. Ken Bates had one win and two 2nds. Mark Hamer had one win and a 3rd. Third place finishers included Steve Stopa (2) and Ron

Hawkins (1).

Thursday April 27

A cloudy day with showers, but the dozen skippers who showed up at the pond voted to sail on. Turns out the rain was so much a concern as was the failing winds (ranging from 1-6k at most.) RO Charlie Sweeney laid out a short West end start but for Nirvana’s, which took much patience. Winds were so light as to stop the fleet in its tracks periodically.

Ken Bates loved(?) the conditions towards winning four races and a 3rd place. Tim Leonard had one win, two 2nds and two 3rds. Harry Howard had one win and a 2nd. Other second place finishes were by Steve Stopa (2) and Charlie Sweeney (1). Third places were by Garrett VanKoughnett (2) and Bruce Blomgren (1). The Dragon boats found more favor with the light winds and course especially RO Charlie Sweeney with three wins and a 3rd. Dick Denzler had two wins, a 2nd and a 3rd. Steve Stopa had three 2nds and Ken Bates had a 2nd and three 3rds. The rains intensified to a point where all skippers abandoned the last race of the day. Four Skippers later fought the rain to celebrate Beer Thursday at Members.
