It's an Ace, All Right

Nick Fletcher was playing Founders as a sub in a regular afternoon group

with Mark Prosnak, Jack Floyd and Bob Sutton on Thursday afternoon. The

3rd hole was playing with the wind and with the pin in the far back, so

shots past the ridge in the center of the green from the III tees were

no longer visible. Mark and Nick had both hit good shots toward the

back of the green and thus out of sight, but when the foursome

approached the green, neither ball was on the green and only one ball

could be seen having gone over the back. That left only one place for

the ball and, sure enough, Nick's ball was sitting in the bottom of the

hole, making his first career hole-in-one. More fortunately for Nick,

the Founders Club bar was closed for renovations, saving him untold free

drinks...for now.

January 8 Round Robin Re-cap

Women: 16 ladies came out to have fun, meet new friends and play some good tennis. Three players were new to the Monthly Round Robin and we are delighted they are now part of the SJTA community. The top honors went to Birthday Girl Renee Shaefer with a whopping 3 game lead. First-timer Louise Hall came in second. Fun points played on all the courts. Email Liz Sullins if you would like to play on February 12th.

Men: We got lucky with November temperatures in January for Men's Round Robin. We had 20 players on five courts for the first RR of 2023 with a great mix of player levels. It was predictably competitive with many extended points, and guys such as Tom White and John Koenig hitting winners against higher-rated players. The result was a 3-way tie for first between Bob Patton, Bill Kamszik, & (RR rookie) Scotty Seal. Scotty was the winner in a 1-point playoff. (Most of the players stayed around to watch, and were a little disappointed that it took Bill and Scotty two racquet spins to figure out who was going to serve since it was getting dark, and cocktail hour was calling). A good time was had by all. Next Men's RR is February 12. Email Tom Miller.

St. James Men's Softball

Jimmies

Jimmies Softball will return in April 2023.

The St James Jimmies senior softball team is seeking prospective new players for the 2023 Spring season. If you are a former player and would like to be considered for a roster spot, contact Coach Tony Rollins at 703-901-3218 or email here, for a tryout opportunity. The Jimmies play in the Brunswick County 50+ Senior Softball League. Double headers are played every Tuesday morning during the Spring and Fall seasons. The competition can be intense, and the fun, fellowship, and camaraderie are beyond compare.

Gators Softball

The Spring softball season will be starting shortly. Practice is beginning the end of January and the season will start in mid-March. The Gators have a strong core of returning players but we are always looking to add experienced softball players to our squad. If you have an interest in playing Senior Softball, for the St. James Gators, please contact Greg Patterson at here, or Rich Kelly here.

St. James Men's Bowling League

WHEN YOU’RE HOT, YOU’RE HOT

And when you’re not, well you blame the lanes. Scores were down from the week before. But the top three teams (Pocket Pounders, Livin’On A Spare, and Wise Guys) show no signs of cooling off. F Troop found a spark and burned out the cold Nor’easters, while the winless X-Men are still struggling to find two bowling pins to rub together. Bill Doody -706(244,206,256) remains a man on fire, and Rich Plant -663(268,205) is hot on his heels. Other top scores from last week were bowled by Joe Stiene -573(201), Robert Farrell -564(235), Tom Green -563(212), Tom Harrington -560(213), Dennis Mancinelli -555, Mark

Zaenglein -548(203), Rich Wantuck -540(200), John Lanoue -537, Ray Cook -536, Jack D’Ambrosio -536(202), Ron Parton -531, Doug Voegtlin -523(204), Ken Rienth -520, John Bronneck -519(200), Ed Wolf -512, Madis Smit -509, Dennis Courtnage -506, and Ron Hawkins -503.

St. James Bocce League

St. James Bocce administers a 1-on-1 bocce 'ladder'. A 'ladder' is a competitive list of players who challenge each other to matches with the goal of rising to the top of the list.

Players of all skill levels are invited to play on Saturday mornings during open play at Waterway Park from 10 till Noon. This is a great opportunity to try out Bocce if you have never played or wish to polish your skills. Spring League information will be coming out soon.

To sign-up for the ladder, receive notifications about League sign ups or for general questions email us here.

St. James MYC Race Results

STJMYC Results Week of Jan. 19, 2023

Tuesday was a windy day and RO Ken Bates set a very nice course. The Nirvana/65 fleet had 9 boats racing and the wins were shared among four of them: Mark Hamer and Dick Denzler had two apiece, Pete Flynn and Charlie Sweeney had one each. The DragonFlite 95s had four racers. Wins went to

Charlie S. 4, and Dick D. with 2.

Thursday was even windier and gusty causing many blow downs, collisions and groundings. RO Ron Hawkins set his usual devilish course with port and starboard buoy roundings. The course along with the gusts gave the 95s a tough time, even though they tend to handle high winds better than the Nirvanas. There were five racers: Charlie S. (3), Dick D. (2), Ken Bates (1), Steve Stopa and Duane Stewart. All the boats ran aground or submarined at some point.

The Nirvana/DF65 standings:

1. Mark Hamer- .9045

2. Dick Denzler- .8836

3. Neal Boucher- .8721

The Dragon 95 standings:

1. C. Sweeney- .9389

2. D. Denzler- .9271

3. K. Bates- .8219
