These warm summer temperatures are hanging on and we're all looking forward to a little relief once Fall arrives at the end of the month. Right now is a time of transition for our farmers and you'll notice new produce appearing on their tables in the upcoming weeks. If you have a favorite Summer fruit or veggie, be sure to pick it up before it's gone until next year. Also, if you're looking to spice up your breakfast routine, check out this recipe for Butternut Squash French Toast. You heard us! Get a serving of veggies in at breakfast and bring a new twist to a favorite meal. Let us know if you have any favorite butternut squash recipes - we'd love to hear from you!

See you tomorrow!

Become a friend of the
Durham Farmers' Market!
The Durham Farmers' Market has been a community destination in downtown Durham since 1999 thanks to YOU, our loyal customers and supporters. Over the years we have grown the market and continue to provide Durham with an event that nourishes the soul of our wonderful city.  You may not know that the market operates primarily off of the weekly stall fees from our farmers and artisans. Despite this modest budget, we are constantly working to make fresh and healthy food accessible to our entire Durham community.  We want to continue expanding the offerings of our market and need your help to make this happen.  The Friend of Durham Farmers' Market program provides an opportunity for you to invest in the future of the market by making recurring or one-time contributions via PayPal or check. Examples of how we will use the funds include expanding our children's programming, continuing our outreach efforts to underserved communities in Durham, and developing our nutrition education programs. We invite you to invest in your market. Please continue stimulating our local food economy and join our effort to build a stronger, healthier Durham. Thank you!

Terra Clotha
Who doesn't love dinosaurs? Although they've been gone more than 60 million years, a lot of us would like to see one peek around that building over there, if only for a minute. Preferably a stegosaurus, but we're really not trying to be picky. We have thought hard about the dinosaur conundrum recently, and finally decided there was something we could do to help bring dinosaurs back, at least on clothing. So we went into our Mad Scientist Clothing Lab (ask about our lab coats) and came up with a line of batik dino T-shirts for children. They are colorful and funky. Fun to wear. And try not to put the T-rex in the same drawer as the triceratops.

Clothing from Terra Clotha. For the kid in all of us.

Honeygirl Meadery
Honeygirl Meadery is a small urban meadery in downtown Durham, making an ancient craft beverage for modern days. Mead is essentially wine made from honey, with many different styles that include additions of fruits, flowers and herbs. Our meads are hand-crafted libations made in small batches, using both local and global true source honey, local fruits, herbs and flowers. They are naturally gluten free. Our downtown Durham Tasting Room is open on Fridays from 3-7 pm, Saturdays from 1-6 pm and Sundays from 1-5 pm.

This week we will be sampling: our BRAND NEW Mango Habanero Mead, a lightly sweet mead made with earthy clover honey, tropical mangos and infused with spicy habanero peppers.

We will also be sampling our new release of Strawbanero Mead, a lightly sweet mead with fresh strawberries and a spicy kick. Fermented with NC strawberries, wildflower honey and infused with habanero peppers to bring a little heat.

And we will also be sampling our Strawberry Mead , made with local strawberries and NC wildflower honey. Fresh and fragrant, light-bodied and dry, with a soft, lingering strawberry finish - pairs perfectly with champagne for a "mead-mosa!"

We will also have bottles available of our Orange Blossom Mead, a lightly sweet traditional mead made with orange blossom honey; and our Lavender Mead , an infusion of fresh-dried local lavender flowers in our orange blossom traditional mead .

Chapel Hill Creamery
We had our first calf of the fall calving season born last week and we'll have 11 more in the next 6 weeks. The cows have had plenty of grass to graze this summer with the rain we've had which always makes us happy and the yellow color of the carotene shows in the milk and cheese. We'll have a good supply of Dairyland Farmers which won first of it's category at the American Cheese Society's competition. We make this cheese every week as it is unaged and moist which means it is best eaten fresh. Dairyland Farmers is soft and tangy and a staple at our house. Add to any Mexican dish like tacos with our Chorizo sausage, Chile Rellanos, tomato sandwiches, with hot pepper jelly, or try our recipe for Market Salad with apples.

Other cheeses for  Saturday  are Hickory Grove, Danziger, a little Carolina Moon, and Calvander. Hickory Grove and Danziger are both washed rind cheeses but made differently for different textures. Serve Hickory Grove with apples or melt for a great grilled cheese sandwich. Danziger is softer and a little stronger and can be spread on slices of baguette. Use the 7 month aged Calvander for homemade pesto with fresh basil, salads, or pasta. Carolina Moon is a Camembert style; we have sold a lot of this to a new wholesale distributor so we have limited quantities of it until the new calves arrive so that we have more milk for our cheeses.

Our ground beef is back! Our beef is full of flavor from our grazing herd and makes a delicious cheeseburger with Hickory Grove cheese. Sausages  include Mild Italian, Hot Italian, Smoked Andouille, Bratwurst, Chorizo, Polish with mustard and garlic, Mild Country Breakfast, and Maple and Sage Breakfast Links.  We also have ground pork, smoked ham hocks, and a little bacon.  All our pork is from our pigs who drink the nutritious whey from cheese making. See you Saturday and don't forget your cooler!

The Spicy Hermit
The Spicy Hermit crafts traditional and seasonal kimchi using fresh produce from local farms (including those at Durham Farmers' Market!) and time-honored fermentation methods. What is kimchi? Simply put, kimchi is a delicious product resulting from seemingly magical alchemy of vegetables and spices. All kimchi from The Spicy Hermit is raw, gluten-free, and vegan, and manufactured at each produce's seasonal peak.

Our current offerings are:  green cabbage and butternut squash. Come early to get best selection! Try them as a side dish, like pickles, or as seasoning for dips or sauces.

Maple Spring Gardens
Here we are in the beginning of September, experiencing what might well be the warmest stretch of the whole summer. And yet, in spite of the temperatures, this week brings the first of our cool season greens back to market! If you're starting to tire of tomatoes and eggplant, then come by early to snag some chard and kale. Perhaps even more exciting than that, we'll be digging up our first baby ginger of the season. For those of you who haven't had baby ginger yet, you're in for a treat! Though just as big as (or even bigger than!) the ginger you'll find at the grocery store, it doesn't have the thicker skin or more fibrous flesh of it's more mature counterpart. In this tender form, it's super easy to work with (no peeling required!) and excellent for candying, juicing, smoothies, and cooking.  Though it won't keep out on your counter, it will keep in the fridge for about two weeks or can be frozen to enjoy all winter long! So come on by for ginger, greens and more, including: tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, potatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, arugula, pea shoots, butternut, pumpkins, cilantro, parsley, mint, hibiscus, and tulsi.

Hurtgen Meadows Farm
We will be bringing yellow and green beans, cucumbers, arugula, radishes, a variety of tomatoes, potatoes, bell, lunchbox and hot peppers, eggplant, sweet onions, and summer and fall squash and garlic.
Our new hens are finally laying eggs daily. We'll have fresh eggs from our free-ranging happy chickens that are fed organic grains.
We will have beautiful, seasonal flower bunches.
Current varieties available include peach, kiwi, strawberry, sweet onion and pepper jam. Our award winning jams and jellies are made in small batches using local ingredients. Our family has made jams for multiple generations and we are happy to share with our customers.

All of Hurtgen Meadows produce, plants, fruits and flowers are naturally grown using sustainable practices - no synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers are ever used on our farm.

Catbriar Farm
This warm/hot/scorching weather has perked up the tomatoes and okra. If you make pickled okra, now is the time to get busy! We will bring plenty of okra, tomatoes, bell peppers, eggplant, green beans, fresh and dried herbs, and zinnias. In addition to individual cuts, we are now offering a variety of beef packages so you can fill your freezer with Catbriar Farm Angus beef. Stop at our table and check it out!

This week I am featuring passion flowers. These exotic flowers look like they arrived from another planet! They can be found growing on vines in ditches in our area. Duke Gardens also has some in the White Garden and climbing porch posts.

I have a wide selection of photographic greeting cards featuring iconic spots around  Durham, the OBX, Flowers, Fantasy, Animals, Whimsy, and astronomical images. If you don't see a subject you are looking for, just ask - I may have it.  This week's image is of a passion flower, of course!

Many of my photos can be previewed on my Smugmug website I will also have enlargements in 11x14" and 16x20" sizes and can make posters upon request. Drop by for a look and a chat!

My name is Gabriela Kavanaugh and I am owner and roaster for Caballo Rojo Coffee, roasting locally here in Durham. My grandfather was a leading coffee roaster in Venezuela and I wanted to continue this family tradition in my local community. My goal is to create moments involving coffee that connect the international community,  that provides us with coffee, with our our local community. We are excited to be able to foster this vision by being at the Durham Farmers Market, providing you with cups of brewed coffee and bags of whole bean coffee.
