Your Child's Upcoming IEP Meeting

By Melissa Signore, ABD, M.A.

Family Service Coordinator/

Developmental Psychologist

Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings will be held over the coming months by school districts. This is an opportunity for parents, educational staff, and school districts to share valuable information about a student’s progress and to plan for the next school year. As parents, in preparation for your child’s meeting, you may want to:

Touch base with your Family Service Coordinator prior to the IEP meeting. This provides you with the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about your child’s educational progress, to discuss an idea for a specific goal for the coming school year, and to discuss any concerns you may have. It is always good to have a relaxed conversation about your child ahead of the IEP meeting.

Spectrum Services salutes Black History Month. Our classrooms are already planning ways to commemorate the many contributions and sacrifices African Americans have made to the nation.

Summer is Closer

Than You Think

Monday July 8 – Friday Aug. 16th

The decision for your child to attend the summer program is made at your Annual Review conference. It is important to remember that this is a continuation of your child’s educational program, and the goal is to prevent regression during the 10 week summer period.

The students also receive their related services during school hours. We also add in many fun summer activities, including our Water Splash Park!

Please schedule your vacation plans before or after the summer school program. Also, be sure to let your Family Service Coordinator know as soon as possible if your child will not be attending the 2023 Summer program!.

Upcoming Parent Groups and Workshops

At Spectrum Services we believe that parents must be partners in their child’s educational program. For this reason we offer Parent Support and Parent Workshops free for any parent of a child with a developmental disability. Funding is provided through grants from the Office of People with Developmental Disabilities. Click on any of the workshops below for details and Zoom link.

Understanding Sensory Systems

Wed. 2/14 – 12:30 – 2:00 – Remote Only - Click Here.

Thurs. 2/15 – 6:30 – 8:00 - In-person at Kingston School or Remote - Click Here

This workshop will be offering parents and caregivers insights to the sensory principles, which support our students in becoming more alert, organized, and “READY” to learn. We will discuss developmental sequences for providing a sound sensory foundation from which children can more dynamically engage in their daily routines, whether it be at home, in the community, or at school. We will explore the sensory systems and how “sensory storms” can present in varying ways based on children’s needs. Presented by Sophia Scala MS, OTR/L and Melissa Dagele COTA/L

Parent’s Discussion Group- Sibling Discussion Group

Wed. 2/21  6:30 – 8:00 – Meets in-person at Our Kingston School or Remote

Our parent discussion group offers caregivers the chance to share parenting experiences, educational and management strategies, community resources, upcoming conferences and new research. We can also offer support to one another in an informal and comfortable setting. Our special sibling discussion group is for the brothers and sisters ages 5-12 and includes various fun activities designed to help children learn many new ways of playing and interacting with their sibling in a fun manner. Facilitated by Leah Siuta.

Groups are free of charge for families of a child with a developmental disability. Parents can participate live via zoom, we ask for cameras to be on.
