Budget Update

Well, that was a helluva way to end the spring session. After missing our aspirational adjournment date of the 24th, we adjourned for the holiday weekend with a plan to return for final action on the budget and a handful of unfinished business. We came into session on Tuesday, technically at noon, but really didn’t get going until much later in the afternoon. The plan was to power through to midnight, adjourn, and immediately reconvene for a second day on Wednesday as parliamentary rules required action on two separate legislative days. And that’s what we did, although with a few hiccups related to attendance issues that led to our adjournment around 5 am having barely gotten the budget package through and leaving a few items unfinished such as our bill to reform the Prisoner Review Board and much-needed changes to the cannabis and hemp regulatory frameworks. I issued a couple of statements in the aftermath to give you a sense of what happened. My statement on our failure to address systemic issues at PRB is here. My end-of-session press release is here.

I’m so glad to be back home and right now unpacking 5 months of stuff that’s made its way to the Springfield apartment, facing the judgment of the kitties for my absence, and hopefully getting out into the garden is top of my to-do list for now (at some point the home from college boys will have time to connect too, I’m sure). I’m excited to start to reenter humanity here with a couple of low-key events on the calendar. Tomorrow, I’ll be stopping by the grand opening of our newest social equity cannabis dispensary at Perception Cannabis at 7000 N. Clark.

Sunday is the opening day of the Glenwood Sunday Market. I’ll be there for the ribbon cutting at 9 and look forward to seeing some of my favorite vendors, chatting with neighbors, and picking up some fresh and healthy goodies to make up for the eleventy-billion tons of candy and other crap I spent the last few days absolutely shoveling into my mouth as we all stress ate our way through the last few days of session. This market is truly a treasure and even when I’m not in need of produce, it’s a key touchpoint of my week to wander through and say hi to neighbors and friends.

I will add further updates as it relates to the budget next week.

Legislative Update

This session brought another wave of legislative victories from the Dobbs Working Group. As many of you know at this point I was tasked with leading a group of Illinois legislators shortly after Roe v. Wade fell in 2022. We listen carefully to our advocates and connect with legal experts as a means to see what else is needed to tackle so our reproductive and gender-affirming care rights here in Illinois remain strong. We have had many successes as it relates to proactively building up our lawful healthcare protections for those seeking both reproductive healthcare and gender-affirming care. We continue to see many states attack our most vulnerable populations as they seek to control people's bodies. The faith in the U.S. Supreme Court continues to dwindle and states like Illinois will keep doing what is possible to be a safe haven for those in need. Please see below our most recent legislative victories.
