NEWSLETTER AND SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT
Losing Track of Days – Recipients Announced

The Yellowknife Community Foundation and the Northern Arts and Cultural Centre are pleased to announce the recipients of our Losing Track of Days – NWT Artists & COVID-19 grants program.

Yellowknife Community Foundation Board Member Scott Marsden – “We were overwhelmed by the positive response to this special grant program. Thirty-eight artists from around the NWT representing nearly 20 art disciplines received funding of $55,000 to support their work.”

Marie Coderre, Executive and Artistic Director for the Northern Arts and Cultural Centre – “Artists bring a wealth of knowledge to community members across the Northwest Territories, and we must gather our voices to support the art scene during these unprecedented times. On behalf of the NACC Board of Directors, we are very proud of this alliance with the Yellowknife Community Foundation. Being community-minded never had such a significant meaning. Thank you to everyone, and congratulations to all successful artists.”

Launched in December 2020 as a special COVID-19 response project by the Yellowknife Community Foundation and the Northern Arts and Cultural Centre, Losing Track of Days is a special project designed to help NWT artists confront new fiscal realities brought on by the pandemic. The initiative was designed to put needed cash into the hands of professional artists in these incredibly trying times.

A special feature of the program was a request to the successful artists to chronicle their work so that a lasting visual on-line legacy can be created to mark this important point in northern and world history and inspire future generations when times are trouble. The Foundation and NACC will work with artists to develop and release these visual legacy records as they become available. A complete list of the artists receiving funding is attached.

The Yellowknife Community Foundation was formed in 1993 to provide interested individuals and organizations with a means of supporting projects in our community for the enduring future. The Foundation is not singularly dedicated to any specific area of support. It embodies a simple concept – that people working together can make a difference.

The Northern Arts and Cultural Centre (NACC) was incorporated in 1981. For over 30 years, NACC has been a venue and supporting agency for northern, national and international artists. We operate a variety of programs in communities throughout the NWT to encourage the development of the performing arts from all cultural traditions and to provide a venue in the Northwest Territories for community and professionally produced performances.

On Sunday, March 28th at 2 p.m., the rising stars of the fiddle community from the Aurora Fiddle Society youth programs will perform accompanied by Yellowknife’s own George Mandeville (guitar), Allan Cardinal (bass), and Norm Glowach (drums). There will be a special jigging performance by Vanessa Sanguez, as well as solos by Alice Twa and by James Ross.

LAST WEEK TO SEE HER ARTWORK

Artist of the month is sponsored
by NWT Arts Council and NACC
I raised my family in the Northwest Territories. Currently, I am enjoying spending time with my wonderful grand babies and teaching.

As an artist, I am inspired by Northern geography, and its ever changing skies. I recently discovered a technique that allows me to work on stretchers with watercolor. I capture images with an iPad and then work in my camper studio on site or at my home studio.

I have spent the last three years creating this current body of work on the land capturing the beauty of sunrises and sunsets; scenes from the waters of Reid Lake, Long Lake, Frame Lake, Prelude Lake, Prosperous Lake, and even Duck Lake in Inuvik. As an emerging artist this will be my first solo show and with great gratitude to the NWT Arts Council this has been made possible

Artistic Background
I was raised by two artists. My father taught me to draw an apple before he taught me the letter A at the age of 4. As a family, we would go out and sketch Plein Air in Northern Ontario during the summer holidays. As a teen, I studied life drawing with the Group of Seven’s instructor , Rowely Murphy. My formal Arts training includes a Design Arts Diploma from Seneca College and a Fine Arts Degree from York University.

Artwork available for viewing at the public shows and by appointment with the NACC office. (867) 766-6101
