Jewish Long Beach's Legacy Seminar scheduled for Wed., November 29, has been postponed until early 2024.

The November 30th movie will be Casablanca, a 1942 American romantic drama starring Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, and Paul Henreid. Filmed and set during World War II, it focuses on an American expatriate who must choose between his love for a woman and helping her husband, a Czech resistance leader, escape from the Vichy-controlled city of Casablanca to continue his fight against the Germans. Come watch, discuss, nosh, and visit with friends!

Join us at the Alpert JCC Auditorium as we prepare the next round of Abortion Comfort Kits for Planned Parenthood and Family Planning Associates clinics. Help us do a mitzvah (a good deed) for the women having to come from other states to get the healthcare they need and deserve, and it will feel so good! 

We'll also have a new speaker sharing her Courageous Conversation about her personal experiences with abortion.

We will once again write and collect notes of encouragement to place in the kits. Come enjoy some snacks and great camaraderie, too! We welcome one and all!

We will be so happy to see you, enjoy our community, and have a great potluck brunch!  Please bring a delicious brunch dish to share as well as an unwrapped holiday gift we'll take to our long-time partner For the Child, which serves children and teens recovering from abuse, neglect, or violence. The agency gave us a preferred wish list (board games, toys, gift cards for Target, McDonalds, Amazon, ...), so if you want help choosing a gift, email us at programs@ncjwlongbeach.org. We also hope to have a small boutique of lovely Chanukah items for sale.

About the movie: Set almost entirely in a Chinese restaurant, Dreaming of a Jewish Christmas  is an offbeat, irreverent musical documentary that tells the story of a group of Jewish songwriters, including Irving Berlin, Mel Tormé, Jay Livingston, Ray Evans, Gloria Shayne Baker and Johnny Marks, who wrote the soundtrack to Christianity’s most musical holiday. It’s an amazing tale of immigrant outsiders who became irreplaceable players in pop culture’s mainstream -- a generation of songwriters who found in Christmas the perfect holiday in which to imagine a better world and, for at least one day a year, make us believe in it.
