Annual Summer Evening on the Farm, helping us to raise over $200,000 including $175,000 through a fund a need auction.
We are so grateful for the support from our sponsors, the host committee and vendors (a full list available by

) who all helped make the event a financial success and a great celebration of the work we do to create opportunities for people to live, work and thrive on the Lower Cape. A special thank you to our fund a need auctioneer, former State Senator and Cape Air founder & CEO Dan Wolf for inspiring such generosity.

Finally, we have a busy fall planned as we focus on our future through a strategic planning process. Our Board and staff will participate in a day long retreat later this month and I look forward to sharing with you in coming months our future plans for new investments and programs to support a vibrant, year-round community.

First Time Home Buyer Education: Helping to make a lifelong dream into a reality
|

For many of us, purchasing a home will be the single largest investment we will make. Ironically, it is an investment and process that we enter into with little knowledge or guidance. This lack of understanding can at times have serious consequences. New home owners may find themselves over extended, or there may be issues with the house that a home inspection would have identified had one been conducted.
Recognizing this, the CDP developed a First Time Home Buyer education course 12 years ago to help potential home owners navigate the process and budget appropriately. To date over 550 individuals have graduated from our in person and online First Time Home Buyer workshops.
Over the past 8 months, 41 people have graduated from our First Time Home Buyer class. One of those graduates was Jessica Looney, who recently purchased her grandparent’s house in West Yarmouth.

Allard Farm: A labor of love that is bearing fruit

At the end of a dirt lane, John Allard and Marjorie McGinnis can be found working the soil and nurturing their plants. They are in the process of resurrecting the old Allard family farm and it is a labor of love that is bearing fruit.
In the 1960s John Allard‘s parents built a nursery on their 20-acre property that included a pond and an old cranberry bog. At the time, “we were the only nursery around and people from across the Cape came to visit and purchase their plants,” recalls John. In the 1970s and ‘80s, the nursery was in its heyday, but in the 1990s business shifted as “everyone, including Stop & Shop, got into the plant selling business,” says John, and the nursery ultimately shut down. John went into business on his own, starting a landscape company called Outdoorworks.

When it comes to understanding the complexities of affordable housing and land—use laws, few are better versed or experienced than Attorney Peter Freeman. As he describes it, the services he provides are “soup to nuts” as he works with developers, municipalities, non-profits, and individual homeowners.
In addition to his law practice, Peter is an adjunct professor at Boston University School of Law, where he has been on the faculty for 40 years and teaches Historic Preservation Law and Affordable Housing Law and Community Development. He has been a guest lecturer at the CDP’s Lower Cape Community Housing Institute, is a monthly supporter, and takes advantage of the Community Investment Tax Credit program through the CDP.
A resident of Cummaquid, Peter grew up in Newton and summered with his family on Lake Wequaquet in Centerville in the small seasonal community that his grandfather helped establish in the 1950s.

Team CDP in home stretch for The Gasp
On September 15, our ten-member Team CDP will leave Sandwich and bike to Provincetown to raise money for our economic development programs and housing initiatives.
The Gasp is a fun-filled all day event that begins with a 55 mile bike ride and ends with a boat ride and lobster boil.
We are in the home stretch but would love your support to help us reach our fundraising goals!

Drop-Ins are welcome, but those with a scheduled appointment will be given preference. These sessions are free to Lower Cape small businesses.
