Greetings!
As May comes to a close and we celebrate another successful Jockeys & Juleps Derby Party, we are incredibly grateful for the support of our community. It was inspiring to see so many people come together to support Southern Reins Center for Equine Therapy and give generously to support equine-assisted services for people with disabilities. Our summer session is just around the corner, and we are looking forward to continuing to serve our participants as they achieve, aspire, and amaze.
Here are just a few highlights of all of the great things happening this month at Southern Reins Center for Equine Therapy as we are working to change lives . . . one ride at a time.

What a derby! What a day! Nearly 1,000 guests from across the Mid-South community gathered at the 7th Annual Jockeys & Juleps Derby Party benefiting Southern Reins Center for Equine Therapy on Saturday, May 7, 2022. Presented by First Horizon Advisors for the seventh year in a row, the event featured big hats, bourbon, bluegrass, and a live broadcast of the 148th annual Kentucky Derby.
Celebrating the Run for the Roses . . . Memphis Style, guests donned their derby best to watch the greatest two minutes in sports as the incredible eighty-to-one odd longshot Rich Strike surprised everyone by pulling out the win. Signature mint juleps provided by Spirits Sponsor Athens Distributing and Woodford Reserve were served in celebration of another wonderful event that raised much-needed funding for Southern Reins to continue to grow its programming to serve as many people as can benefit from the services it provides. The event was also attended by Southern Reins’ participants and their families who shared how the organization has made a difference in their lives.
With your help, we raised over $375,000 to support our programs and allow us to continue to carry out our mission of empowering, inspiring, and nurturing our participants to succeed in the saddle.

Southern Reins’ Silver Stirrup Program is a recreational program offered to nursing homes, day programs, group homes, support groups and residential treatment facilities. These visits are also offered as Community-Based Learning Opportunities in partnership with local schools and educational programs. Groups consist of 5-12 participants and activities include meeting our program horses, learning about horses and horsemanship, equine education and more.
Last week, Southern Reins welcomed our friends from Germantown Plantation Senior Living to the farm for a Silver Stirrups visit. Everyone had a wonderful time visiting with some of our therapy horses and observing our Equine Manager, Alex, in the ring with Churro. A special thank you to Alicia Lartigue, for coordinating the visit and sharing your love of horses and Southern Reins with the residents from Germantown Planation.

Lots of hugs and happy tears when your favorite horse leader is back in your lesson!
Julia has been missing her favorite volunteer Wayne the last few weeks. She even wrote him a letter to tell him how much she missed him. What a surprise she got last week, when Mr. Wayne was back in her regular Wednesday lesson this week. The connection between our volunteers and participants is just one of the things that makes Southern Reins such a special place!

Volunteer and Program Coordinator Meredith Massa hosted a Team Leader Appreciation Lunch this week. Our fabulous team leaders help keep the barn and our lessons running smoothly by pulling all of the tack, prepping the horses, and helping all of the lesson volunteers. Thank you to our Spring 2022 Session Team Leaders: Linda Casello, Linda Conlee, Brenda Heindl, and Lu Burkett.
