Southern County Taskforce eNewsletter

January 2024

Dear Community Members,

Soon after inauguration, my administration began working to gather data, set targets, and make real improvements for those who live, work, and do business in southern Harford County. Our goal is to focus government and private resources on the area’s unique challenges and opportunities. I encourage residents, business owners and community organizations to review our initial report found on the southern county taskforce’s website. We need everyone working together to make all of Harford County the best it can be.

Very truly yours,

Bob Cassilly

New Sports Complex Coming to Edgewood

An exciting sports complex is in the works in Edgewood! The Coppermine company will be opening their newest location this spring at 2007 Cedar Drive. It will include eight artificial turf fields, concessions, restrooms, free Wi-Fi, and ample parking. The 40-acre complex will host sporting events and tournaments that will bring visitors with money to spend in the community. Programs and playtimes for area youth will also be available. Details are on the Coppermine website.

Street Sweeping in Edgewood

Our Department of Public Works continues regular street sweeping in the Southern County Taskforce area to keep our communities clean and maintained. This month we focused on the Willoughby Beach neighborhood in Edgewood. If you know of any roads or communities that need extra attention, please contact Jonathan Foster, taskforce coordinator, by email at southerncountytaskforce@harfordcountymd.gov.

Road Improvements in Joppa

This spring, we will be resurfacing roads in the Lohr’s Orchard neighborhood in Joppa. The project will cover 1.74 miles including Hinton Road, portions of Falconer Road, Baldwin Drive, portions of Barksdale Road, and other locations. The project also includes a crosswalk with an island at Joppa Farm Road and Barksdale Road for traffic calming and safer pedestrian travel near Joppatowne Elementary School.

Community Clean-up of Bosley Conservancy in Edgewood

Thanks to community volunteers, trash left from a homeless encampment at Bosley Conservancy was recently clean-up in Edgewood. The former occupants of the encampment were placed in more permanent housing by Harford Community Action Agency and Harford County Department of Public Works provided two trucks for the clean-up. Kudos to all the volunteers from the Harford County Chapter of Izaak Walton League of America.

129 Acres of Parkland Acquired in Joppa

In partnership with Harford Land Trust and Maryland Program Open Space, Harford County has acquired 129 acres of parkland near Robert Copenhaver Park in Joppa. This environmentally sensitive land was once slated for the construction of 232 single family homes. Now it’s protected from development and planning will soon begin to make it a county park for everyone to enjoy.

Water Main Relocation to Ensure Uninterrupted Water Supply

A new 16-inch water main was recently installed under I-95 as part of the Maryland Department of Transportation’s express travel lane expansion in Harford County. The new main is connected to the county’s public water system and will help maintain uninterrupted and resilient supplies of high-quality drinking water to southern Harford County.
