Soup Bowl 2023 - November 2

Catholic Charities’ Samaritan Center will hold its 31st Annual Soup Bowl fundraising event on Thursday, November 2 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Vero Beach Heritage Center and other locations. Handmade pottery bowls and soup will be available for donations. Area businesses, places of worship and other organizations will join the cause by serving soup and offering bowls for donations.

Renee Bireley, Samaritan Center development manager, said, "Indian River County continues to see more working families in crisis and facing homelessness. The Soup Bowl fundraiser proceeds benefit the Samaritan Center which helps homeless families to embark on sustainable pathways to independent living."

Again this year, the volunteer potters at Indian River Clay have worked for several months creating more than a thousand handcrafted bowls that will be sold on Soup Bowl day for this fundraiser that's so important for the operation of the Samaritan Center.

The attached flyer lists locations where lunch and/or dinner will be served with a suggested donation of $5. Purchase of bowls is a separate purchase. The hand-made bowls are available at the Heritage Center and select locations for an additional donation of $20.00. Glenda Taylor, one of the Indian River Clay potters, said, "“Indian River Clay potters will donate over 1,200 bowls this year. It’s a humble fundraiser with a huge impact. For the modest cost of a bowl of soup, you can help change the lives of homeless families in our community."

This is the second year the main event will be held at the Heritage Center. COVID forced a change in the traditional Soup Bowl day in 2020 and 2021, making it an" Empty Bowls Full Hearts" event. Pre-COVID, dozens of locations around the county played host to the event, serving donated soup while displaying and selling the bowls.

Many segments of the community came together for this popular event. Bireley said, "We couldn’t do this event without the Bernard A. Egan Foundation, Heritage Center, the talented potters of Indian River Clay, The Source and our many sponsors, however, what makes the day a success is the community support. Come get your soup! You’ll be helping more than you know, and you’ll get artfully crafted bowls for gifts, keepsakes, and as meaningful symbols of your kindness."

All proceeds benefit the Samaritan Center which provides transitional housing and guidance to homeless families in Indian River County and prepares them to live independently. The Samaritan Center is a program of Catholic Charities, Diocese of Palm Beach.

Billy Collins in Vero Beach This Week

It's finally here! Billy Collins will bring his Adventures in Poetry to Community Church of Vero Beach November 2, presented by the Laura Riding Jackson Foundation. Collins, a former US Poet Laureate, celebrates the foundation's 30th anniversary with a reading of some of his favorite poems written over the past 70 years.

Collins, a Winter Park transplant from New York City, has "highlighted the work of Laura (Riding) Jackson" over the years. He included her poem Take Hands in the series he did for the NYC subways and buses. He has also recognized B.H. Fairchild and John Balaban, the featured poets at LRJF’s Poetry BBQ scheduled on April 13, 2024.

The author’s Florida cracker-style home is located next to Brackett Library on Mueller Campus of IRSC in Vero Beach. The historic house is open for tours on weekends during November—May as well as by appointment.

A recent addition to the garden around the home is a nature walk with samples of Collins' short poems.

“The LRJF board wants the community to have another opportunity to enjoy the very accessible poetry of Billy Collins. Gardens are natural places to slow down and take a break from our busy lives.  While walking along the garden path please take a moment to read a poem that we hope will bring a smile or give you something to think about. We invite everyone to stop by the all-Florida garden at the LRJ historic house on the Muesller campus of IRSC.  The garden is open to the community and we encourage everyone to enjoy and celebrate with us our 30th anniversary in 2023,” said Marie Stiefel, past president and LRJF board member.

Burger lovers will be happy to see The Source food truck on site, voted Best Burger in Indian River County. Attendees can register to win a variety of free door prizes. From The Barn Theatre:

In a season marked by Tony Award winning productions, The Barn is again excited to stage another audience pleaser, the well-known comedic farce “Lend Me A Tenor” by award winning play-write Ken Ludwig. So, here's the plot. When a world-famous Italian tenor, set to perform the starring role in Otello, receives a double dose of tranquilizers through a series of mishaps, the company navigates one catastrophe after another. Dealing with an angry wife, an ambitious female co-star, a presumed death, a flirty head of the opera guild, and secret sex romps, they must find a way to save the opera company's opening night. With crazy costumes, loads of slamming doors, and mistaken identities, will they find a way to save the night?

Director Bryan Childe has put together a magical cast of performers to include Dave Murray (Max), Katelyn Anne Johnson (Maggie), Lou Larsen (Saunders), Kevin Korman (Tito), Colette Schweizer (Maria), Andy Morejon (Bellhop), Amanda Ferrier (Diana), and Molly Raimondi (Julia). The production crew includes Jeanette Mazzella (Producer), Phillip Flugge (Stage Manager), Marcia Molinari (Costumer), and Gus McCall (Master Carpenter/Set Designer).

Top Row (L to R): Kevin Korman, Lou Larsen, Molly Raimondi, Dave Murray, &Amanda Ferrier; Sitting(L to R): Colette Schweizer & Katelyn Anne Johnson;

Missing: Andy Morejon

“Lend Me A Tenor” runs from November 2nd through November 19th and tickets are now available. Call the box office at 772-287-4884 or visit the Barn's website at barn-theatre.com. Group rates for 10 or more are available.

An Eerie Evening at the Tampa Bay Hotel

An Eerie Evening at the Tampa Bay Hotel will be held on October 27, 28, and 29. See the Museum in moonlight as you've never seen it before and explore death and funerals, mourning, and spiritualism from the 19th century. Period lighting, candles, and artifacts set the stage for an evening of spooky fun.

An Eerie Evening at the Tampa Bay Hotel is a rare opportunity to visit the Museum after dark. Visitors to Eerie Evening will meet a local undertaker from the turn of the century, explore Victorian superstitions and traditions, and find hidden clues to decode a mystery through thirteen rooms of the former Tampa Bay Hotel. This is an open house format, so visitors may wander at their own leisure and come and go as they please.

A Request from JazzyJim van Voorheis:

Greetings to my wonderful jazz followers! I'm writing today to see if you might be willing to help out one of my young music colleagues with just the click of your finger. A young vocalist named Stacy performed a program of French music with us a ways back at our jazz series in Stuart. She is the daughter of local bassist David Einhorn.
Stacy (whose nickname is Tessiva) just participated in a vocal competition and the winner will perform at the Terre de Blues Festival 2024, a big music festival in the Caribbean. However, to win, her video has to get the most “likes” on Facebook (yes this is a little crazy, I agree…).
So if your are on Facebook, would you be so kind asto “like” her performance and maybe ask a few friends to do the same?  Her video (called Tessiva & Co) is the first one you see when you open the link. It's easy and there are no strings attached, you just click "like" and that's it.
Tess is up against a far more established singer, so every "like" counts! The contest ends next Tuesday, Oct 31.
Underneath her competition video is a short clip of Tess singing (in Creole!) at the National Jazz Museum in New Orleans, just sending that along not for voting but because it really shows what she can do!
Thanks so much for giving this talented young lady a "click" !
Best regards, Jazzy Jim
