Fire Department Training Exercise Recap
La Habra Heights Fire Department, in collaboration with LA County and Orange County Fire departments, recently held a major training exercise to enhance readiness and response strategies. Fighting hillside wildfires was the focus and the exercise equipped firefighters with the skills and strategies to effectively tackle and contain fires in rugged and challenging terrain.
|
An LA County Bell 412SP helicopter practiced siphoning water from an 8,000-gallon refillable Heli-hydrant located in La Habra Heights and dropping the water on designated sites nearby. Firefighters conducted their drills climbing up a steep hill on Lupin Hill Road.
The trainings are important to ensure that the city's fire department and nearby agencies are familiar with the conditions of the Heights and other hillside communities. The trainings also provide insights to the fire team, helping them to better understand and make adjustments to improve their preparedness to respond to and fight fires in the event of a fire in the Heights or nearby areas.

Defend Your Home from Wildfires
|
Wildfires pose a potential threat to the La Habra Heights community and can occur at any time. Creating a defensible space around your home can increase its chances of survival. A nearby burning home or tree can transfer flames to your home, this makes a defensible space crucial in reducing the risk of your home catching fire. A defensible space is an area around a building where vegetation, debris, and other combustible fuels have been treated, cleared, or reduced to slow the spread of fire to and from the building.
Create three zones to protect your home against wildfires.
Zone 1: Eliminate all combustible materials within 30 feet of the home, such as fire-prone vegetation, firewood stacks, combustible patio furniture, umbrellas, and dimensioned lumber decking. Desirable substitutions include irrigated grass, rock gardens, stone patios, metal patio furniture, and noncombustible decking.
Zone 2: Ensure that Zone 2 only contains individual and well-spaced clumps of trees and shrubs and a few islands of vegetation surrounded by noncombustible materials. Use hardscape features such as driveways, paved or gravel walkways, or patios to create firebreaks throughout the yard. Plant fire-resistant, low-volume vegetation that retains moisture well and requires minimal maintenance, such as pruning and removing dead and dying branches. Also, make sure to separate auxiliary structures such as a detached garage, pump house, pergola, and utility shed from the home by at least 50 feet. Increase the distance if the structure is used for the storage of combustible materials.
Zone 3: Reduce fuels that are farther than 100 feet from the building by thinning and pruning vegetation horizontally and vertically. Thinning and pruning in Zone 3 can be more limited than in Zone 2. The goals in Zone 3 are to improve the health of the wildlands and help slow an approaching wildfire.
With the Fourth of July approaching, it's important to stay vigilant, prepared, and fire-ready. Embers or sparks emitted from fireworks can easily ignite a wildfire. High heat, low humidity, strong winds, and the presence of fuel (dead vegetation) can combine to create a devastating wildfire. The City of La Habra Heights strongly encourages residents to prioritize brush clearance, emphasizing its crucial role in wildfire prevention and protection of structures. All fireworks, including "safe and sane," are illegal in the City of La Habra Heights.

Typical Household Cleaning
|
Many residents use spring and summer to clean houses. There are common products that are fine to use in the home but should not be disposed of outside.
Most people don’t know that most products, unless biodegradable, should not be disposed of outdoors in storm drains and waterways.
| |
HHW products should not be placed in your trash. Bring them to a collection event or a permanent center for proper disposal.
|
As part of the NPDES MS4 Permit, the City is to provide resources to the residents concerning proper disposal. In LA County, the HHW Team has great resources at:

Know Your HHW - HHW is any product labeled toxic, poisonous, corrosive, flammable, combustible or irritant. E-Waste is any outdated or unwanted electronic device such as a TV, stereo, electronic game, microwave, computer or a small household appliance.
