International Women's Day: #EmbraceEquity
As we celebrate IWD, the courageous women who call Sonshine Centre home inspire us. One woman’s story stands out this month that exemplifies the strength, compassion, and care of women who are leaving to live a violence free life:
Seyi came to Sonshine shortly before her delivery date. One of the most dangerous times for a woman to leave domestic abuse is during pregnancy. In Seyi’s decision to leave abuse, she also left friends and family to stay safe and keep her location undisclosed.
Seyi joined a cooking program at Sonshine, an opportunity to meet other woman who have gone through a similar experience. They make new friends while cooking with spice, sharing well-loved recipes from their homes, and celebrating culture together. Through this group, Seyi was embraced by other woman who call Sonshine home. Together, they planned how to support Seyi during her labour and delivery and her postpartum journey. Seyi let Sonshine staff know she didn’t require any planning support as the other residents had already agreed to be her community in this significant transition.
In the face of adversity and overcoming, these women, including Seyi, inspire us with their strength, determination, and compassion.
We live, work, play and heal in community. Women are often the backbones in our society as life givers, caregivers, leaders, innovators, advocates, mentors and so much more.
