From the Director of Education | |
Dear Mountain Song Families,
This week, I had the pleasure of experiencing one of those magical, unexpected moments that make Mountain Song such a special place.
While walking through the playground, I encountered a small, harmless snake. And as curiosity often does, it sparked something wonderful. I couldn’t resist the opportunity to share this experience with a few students who were nearby. Watching their faces light up with both excitement and a little hesitation as they touched the snake reminded me of the incredible power of curiosity. These moments, where learning takes a tangent and leads us somewhere unplanned, are some of the most impactful. They may not be found in a textbook, but they create a space for exploration, connection, and discovery.
At Mountain Song, we value these moments—whether they happen on the playground, during a walk home, or in the spontaneous conversations that happen throughout the day. It’s these opportunities, when we embrace the unexpected and lean into the curiosity that comes our way, that foster a love for learning that lasts a lifetime.
I feel grateful to share this journey of curiosity and wonder with your children each day. Here’s to many more in-between moments of discovery!
Please remember there will be NO SCHOOL for grades K-4 today as it's an assessment day. Parents should have been contacted by classroom teachers to schedule a testing slot for their child. Regular class will be held for for grades 5-8.
Warm regards,
Nate Mylin, M.S. Ed.
Director of Education/Principal

CORRECTION: Calendar Update |
Due to the late start thanks to COVID, we are required to make up four school days. You will notice an updated calendar that will include the following additional school days...
- May 13 - 1/2 Day until noon
- May 27 - Full Day
- May 28-29 - 1/2 days until noon
In last week's Songbird, we erroneously said March 13th would be an additional day, rather than May 13th.

Introducing Parent-Counselor Connect
Topic #1: Bullying Prevention
September 17th, 3:45 - 4:45 p.m.
| |
Our School Counselor, Kim Butler, MA, LPCC, will host a Parent Afternoon on Tuesday, September 17th, from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. to discuss Bullying Prevention. In this Parent-Counselor Connect Group, we will explore what bullying is—and what it isn’t. We’ll talk about the different types of bullying, its effects, and how to empower children to stand up to bullying behaviors.
For bullying prevention programs to be effective, we need to come together as a community to support our students with research-based strategies. If you’ve ever had questions about how to talk to your child about bullying, how to support them in building positive relationships with peers, or how to help when they are feeling bullied, this parent event is for you!
We look forward to seeing you there!
Childcare will be provided. If you have any questions, please reach out to Kim at kbutler@mountainsongschool.org.

Coming Soon: Festival of Courage
Friday, September 27th
| |
The Festival of Courage at Mountain Song is a beloved event held during school hours that challenges our students to tap into their inner strength and resilience. This obstacle course is more than just a physical challenge; it's a celebration of bravery and perseverance. Inspired by the story of St. Michael and the Dragon, the festival encourages students to face their fears and overcome obstacles, both literal and metaphorical. By participating in this event, children learn the value of courage, determination, and the confidence that comes from confronting challenges head-on, all while building a strong sense of community and support.

Coming Soon: Stone Soup Harvest Festival
& Rummage Sale
Saturday, October 5th, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.
| |
The Stone Soup Harvest Festival, hosted by Parent Circle, is a cherished tradition at our school, celebrating community, gratitude, and the bounty of the harvest season. The festival is inspired by the classic folk tale of "Stone Soup," where a simple stone, combined with contributions from everyone in the village, creates a nourishing meal for all. In this spirit, each family brings a vegetable to add to a communal pot of soup, symbolizing how individual contributions can come together to create something greater. This event not only honors the earth's abundance but also fosters a sense of togetherness and shared responsibility, reinforcing the values of cooperation and gratitude that are central to Waldorf education.
Please mark you calendar for our Stone Soup Harvest Festival on Saturday, October 5th from 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. and stay turned for ways you can help make this a feast to remember!
We are also collecting gently used donations for our rummage sale during the Stone Soup Festival. Please bring your items to the table near the front office.

A huge thank you to Daniel Coombs, husband of our wonderful Ms. Hannah Lewis, for improving the kindergarten fence! Your hard work makes such a difference, and we are so grateful for your time and effort in keeping our school safe and welcoming.
We also want to give a shout-out to Nikki Barrios, one of our amazing paraprofessionals, for spoiling the staff with delicious homemade treats during the first week of school. What a thoughtful way to start the year—your kindness has truly brightened our days!
When volunteers step in to help, it makes a lasting impact, and we’re so thankful to have such a dedicated and caring community.
