Keeping Tabs on Your Consumption: All About

KYZ - Pulse Metering

KYZ pulse metering is a technique used to report, in near real time, electric use by external devices and systems. It relies on a meter to generate a signal, called a pulse, each time a specific amount of electricity flows by. These meters are widely used in both commercial and industrial settings for energy monitoring and management.

How it Works

KYZ pulse meters monitor the energy flow. They are designed to produce a pulse each time a predetermined amount of energy passes the meter, either in watt-hours (Wh) or kilowatt-hours (kWh). The number of pulses generated is directly proportional to the amount of electricity consumed.

There are Two Things You Can Do with KYZ Pulses:

1) Count them for recording kWh consumption (energy use)

2) Time them for kW demand - This is where the $$$ is!

Benefits of Pulse Metering

Simple: Equipment is easy to install, typically requiring minimal electrical wiring modifications for installation.

Universal: Pulses are virtually compatible with every application.

Applications

Demand Response Programs: They can be used to participate in demand response programs, where consumers are rewarded for reducing their electricity use during peak periods.

Demand Control & Energy Management Systems: Pulses are used by energy management and building automation systems to control energy use in real time and identify areas for improvement.

NEW! WPG-1 Wireless Meter Pulse Generator

The WPG-1 Wireless Meter Pulse Generator integrates AMI smart meter technology with legacy KYZ pulse metering. Using a Wi-Fi interface, the WPG-1 meter pulse generator receives usage data from the meter, interprets power usage, and quickly converts it into KYZ pulses. With the WPG-1 Wireless Meter, pulses are synthesized without having an actual KYZ output at the meter. By doing this, the utility can implement this advanced meter, and still provide pulses to customers that may need them.

New! WPG-1SC, for Itron

Gen 5/Riva AMI Meter, Wireless Meter Pulse Generator

The WPG-1SC Wireless Meter Pulse Generator is SSI’s wireless Pulse Link to the ITRON Gen5/Riva meter. It integrates AMI smart meter technology with legacy KYZ pulse metering. Using its own dedicated Wi-Fi network, the WPG-1SC receives usage data from the Riva's HAN device, interprets power usage, and converts it into KYZ pulses. With the WPG-1SC, pulses are synthesized without having an actual hardwired KYZ output in the meter. By using the WPG-1SC, utilities can implement the new advanced AMI meters and still provide pulses to customers that may need them.

Other New Innovations From Solid State Instruments

DPR-2 Programmable Dividing Pulse Relay

The DPR-2 is a programmable microcontroller-based, high-speed dividing pulse relay designed to provide two independent “dry” 2-wire Form A contacts (KY) from a 2-wire Form A pulse input. An output pulse occurs when a specified number of input pulses have been received. The divider’s ratio of input to output pulses may be set between .00001 and 100,000. Using floating point math, the DPR-2 can be configured to scale input to output pulses to an exact ratio desired.

PRL-2SC Wireless Pulse Link

The PRL-2SC wireless pulse link is a low-cost, single-channel, point-to-point system with one transmitter and one receiver for short- hop pulse applications. Typically, these are parking lots, fields, roads, railroad tracks or anywhere where it is difficult to get a hardwired KYZ pulse from the meter. The PRL-2SC is a self-contained, Form A (2-wire), Line-of-Sight system capable of transmitting pulse information up to about 1 mile depending on topography and particulars of the mounting locations and space in between.
