En Mémoire

Vintage photo of Maryse Conde

The Grande Dame of Caribbean literature, Maryse Condé, died this week at the age of 90. Condé was a guest lecturer at Lehman in 1990 on the topic of the metamorphosis of Africa in French Caribbean writing and received an honorary doctorate of humane letters from Lehman in 1994.

"She was an inspiring example for generations of students and readers, especially women, as a fearless and outspoken intellectual, even in contexts of racist misogyny,” said Professor Thomas Spear (French).

Spear also noted that Condé may be the first writer to fictionalize Lehman College–written in French as 'Liman College'– where the young character of Les Derniers Rois Mages studies.
