Latest from the Soil Hub: Soil Health Field Day in Anderson Valley & Grazing Management Workshop for Technical Assistance Providers

Vineyard Soil Health Field Day in Anderson Valley

In early May, Mendocino County Resource Conservation District hosted a soil health and climate-beneficial agriculture field day at Ferrington Vineyard in Anderson Valley. As part of the North Coast Soil Hub, Mendocino County RCD has partnered with Norman Kobler for nearly 10 years to examine the impacts of soil health practices. Thanks to all the folks who attended for an enlightening day in the field!

Climate-Smart Grazing Management Workshop for Technical Assistance Providers

As part of our efforts through the USDA-NRCS Grazing Lands Conservation Initiative, we hosted a grazing management planning workshop for technical assistance providers in partnership with Point Blue Conservation Science at the Pozzi Ranch in West Marin. It was a great opportunity to learn from a seasoned rancher and hone skills to be more effective service providers to local ranchers who are seeking partnership to plan and implement regenerative practices. Thank you to Gold Ridge RCD and Joe Pozzi for hosting!

From the Field: Sonoma County Compost Program Supports Climate Resilience

Local partnership completes first project initiated by Sonoma County’s Climate Resilience Fund

Resource Conservation Districts in Sonoma County are proud to be part of the coalition that recently completed its first round of compost projects to sequester carbon on agricultural lands.

"A partnership between local government, conservation districts and environmental groups today announced the completion of a pilot project that removed carbon from the atmosphere by applying compost on agricultural land, the first project initiated by Sonoma County's Climate Resilience Fund.

The $500,000 project provided rebates that subsidized the use of compost at 16 local farms and ranches in 2023 and funded outreach to educate the public about the environmental benefits of composting. It removed the equivalent of 6,070 metric tons of CO2 from the atmosphere, which is roughly equal to taking 1,500 cars off the road for one year. Sequestering a similar amount of carbon in a single year would take 7,087 acres of forests."

Science Spotlight: The Soil Inventory Project

Cultivating Change: A New Soil Carbon Measurement Strategy to Inform Climate-Friendly Agricultural Management Decisions

Sonoma RCD staff joined an insightful Soil Carbon Measurement event on April 19th, 2024, hosted by Jackson Family Wines and The Soil Inventory Project (TSIP) at Copain Winery in Healdsburg.

TSIP is developing a database and mobile app to streamline soil sampling. Utilizing data from the Soil Survey Geographic Database (SSURGO), the app selects optimal sampling locations based on soil type distribution and data provided by the producer. Once a sample is gathered, the app geotags the final sampling location before submitting to the lab.

Resource Spotlight: Understanding the Science Behind Climate Smart Agriculture in California

The Community Alliance with Family Farmers (CAFF) recently released a review, Understanding the Science Behind Climate Smart Agriculture in California. They conducted a review of the scientific literature on climate smart agriculture in California and Mediterranean climates to improve our collective understanding of the research on these practices, and identify where knowledge gaps still need to be addressed to improve accessibility of these farming practices.
