Our July 2024 NEWSLETTER!

Dear SIG Members,

Welcome to the Socioeconomic Inequalities SIG’s July newsletter!

The Socio-economic Inequalities Special Interest Group (SIG) was established as a ‘community to serve ISBNPA members who share interests and expertise in socioeconomic inequalities in nutrition, physical activity and sedentary behaviours. This year has been an exciting year. We are pleased to provide you with our up-to-date activities in this newsletter.

ISBNPA Omaha 2024 Update

We are delighted to share that our recent conference was an outstanding success! Held in Omaha from 20-24 May 2024, the event brought together a vibrant community of experts, researchers, and practitioners. The conference received 518 attendees from 35 countries. We engaged in thought-provoking discussions, innovative presentations, and invaluable networking opportunities that left us inspired and energised. We also conducted our SIG Business meeting on 21 May 2024.

There were 27 abstract submissions from our SIG, all were accepted. All accepted abstracts can be accessed in our Book of Abstracts [HERE] (the previous abstracts books are also available in this folder).

Here are the three presentations from our SIG that made it to the oral awards session:

●     Dr. Kathryn Janda-Thomt. Nutrition insecurity associated with lower odds of sports participation among United States adolescents: findings from a cross-sectional analysis of nationally representative data.

●     Dr. Jennifer Thomas. Implementation of an intervention combining physical activity with psychological therapy for socially disadvantaged young people: A mixed-methods process evaluation.

●     Mr. Edgar Doolan. Differences between quantitative and qualitative responses to the U.S. Household Food Security Survey Module: Findings for U.S. Latine households with children

Here is the awards for best presentation at ISBNPA2024. All winners will get a free registration for the ISBNPA2025 annual meeting in New Zealand

The food at the conference was a vegetarian delight, entirely plant-based. Some might say, it’s the best food they’ve had at a conference !!

We are also thrilled to share that ISBNPA has managed to significantly reduce our per capita emissions (i.e., total emissions divided by each ISBNPA member) by 50% compared to the same period last year.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the attendees, speakers, and organisers who made this event possible. Amidst the tornado sirens, your contributions and active involvement were instrumental in creating such a memorable and impactful experience. We look forward to our next gathering in Auckland, New Zealand in 2025.

Socioeconomic Inequalities pre-conference workshop update

Unfortunately, the pre-conference workshop co-hosted by Socioeconomic Inequalities and the Cancer Prevention & Management SIGs was canceled. The workshop was entitled “Using a World Cafe Approach of Community Engagement to Address Socioeconomic Inequalities in Cancer Prevention and Management.” We hope to run it on ISBNPA 2025 Auckland!!!

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT PRESENTATIONISBNPA

Dr. Chien Ju Ting is currently conducting a research project that focuses on the representation of female athletes in New Zealand print media. The project involves a corpus discourse analysis using newspaper data from 2022 to 2023. This time period is significant due to important events related to women’s sports in New Zealand, such as the postponement of the 2021 Women’s Rugby World Cup to 2022, the success of New Zealand athletes at the 2022 Winter Olympics, and the FIFA Women’s World Cup. This window of time provides an excellent opportunity to observe the discourse in society regarding females in sports.

EARLY CAREER RESEARCHERS PhD EXPERIENCES
