Service Enterprise

HandsOn Greater Richmond is pleased to announce that Elk Hill, FeedMore, Peter Paul Development Center, and YMCA of Greater Richmond have officially become certified by Points of Light as Service Enterprises. A Service Enterprise is an organization that fundamentally leverages volunteers and their skills to successfully deliver on its social mission.

Research conducted by the TCC Group, a national program and evaluation firm, found that organizations operating as Service Enterprises outperform peer organizations on all aspects of organizational effectiveness and are more adaptable, sustainable, and capable of scaling their work.

Thanks to support from Capital One, these organizations have undergone an intensive, several months-long assessment and training process followed by the development and implementation of action plans geared towards bolstering their organization's capacity to engage volunteers in meaningful ways.

According to Damon Jiggetts, Executive Director, Peter Paul Development Center:

"I'd say the most noticeable change has been in our conversion of volunteers to mentors.  We identified mentoring relationships as a key and impactful tool to promote continued and sustained academic progress.  Our participation as a Service Enterprise has supported an intentional focus on this goal and we have grown the number of mentors substantially...It's been a wonderful resource and capacity building process for us."
PNE Book Club

The third book for the PNE Book Club was Blue Ocean Strategy: How to Create Uncontested Market Space and Make the Competition Irrelevant (BOS). This was the group's first marketing text and so naturally our conversation focused on our nonprofit partners and clients.

One book club member had this to say about our time reading BOS, "It was really compelling. It forced you to think about the mission, think about what we do and not only why we do it but how we do it- and who else is doing it... so many great questions!"
