The long, sunny days of August find full expression in Massachusetts, as visitors take their time to linger, relax and revel in our culture, history, cuisine and the great outdoors. August is the perfect month to explore our beaches and backroads, climb a mountain or surf the waves. Try a lobster roll, sample homemade ice cream, sit at an outdoor cafe or eat at a food truck. You'll find music and dance festivals, ethnic celebrations, museums and art galleries, history tours and heritage walks everywhere you go.

North of Boston
North Shore Music Theatre presents the Tony Award-winning Jersey Boys August 6-September 1! The Salem Jazz and Soul Festival, on August 17-18, is recreating and renewing the vibrant jazz scene that began at the Salem Willows in the 1920's. The 35th Annual Gloucester Schooner Festival is not to be missed! Over 30 schooners fill the harbor this Labor Day weekend. Bring the family for Maritime Heritage Day, deck tours, charters, Parade of Sail and The Mayor's Cup race.

Plymouth County

Scituate Heritage Days will be held August 3-4 at Jericho Road Beach in
Scituate! The Scituate Chamber of Commerce proudly presents one of the South Shore's biggest and most anticipated outdoor events of the summer. Visitors will enjoy free live music and free kids' activities, artisan crafts and historical site visits including Scituate Lighthouse. Also includes Boat Races, NECN Weather Warrior, Goat Yoga, Irish Step Dancing and a Waterfront Beer and Wine Garden. For updated information & times, please click here.

Southeastern Mass

Celebrate Madeiran culture at The 105th Feast of the Blessed Sacrament in New Bedford! This is the largest Portuguese feast in the world and attracts thousands of international visitors each year. The festival, which runs from Thursday August 1 through Sunday August 4, will feature four days of entertainment, music, kids' activities and authentic Portuguese cuisine. Admission is free. The Berkshires

Summer's not over yet in the Berkshires! Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival runs through August 25th, featuring ticketed & free performances, talks, exhibits, classes, parties, and more. Catch world-class dance artists, including Brooklyn-based Gallim on August 7-11, and Massachusetts' own Boston Ballet on August 21-25. Plus, FREE performances take place on the Inside/Out stage every Wednesday through Saturday, including ballet, tap, hip-hop, and many other international genres. Bring a picnic and enjoy the show!

Franklin County
The 6th Annual Pocumtuck Homelands Festival will be held August 3-4 from 10 am to 6 pm on the Unity Park waterfront, First Street in Turners Falls. This free celebration of Native American art, music and culture includes indigenous craft vendors, live performances, kids' activities, and more! Witness the carving of a dugout canoe from a green white pine log with traditional fire carving and scraping by a team from the Aquinnah Wampanoag. Vendors, educators, authors, archaeologists, ceremonial stones experts, demonstration of Northeast Woodlands skills, Native American food vendors and more. Welcoming and interesting for all ages!

Greater Boston
August in Boston invites everyone to fill their days and nights with events, activities and summer fun! Museums offer exhibits where you can look within yourself at Body Worlds, get up close and personal with the Crawley Family at Downton Abbey or take it to the max at Less is a Bore. Music reverberates across the city with outdoor performances, many of which are free, from the Landmarks Orchestra concerts to the annual Gospel Fest, the BAMS Fest on the Esplanade and the Boston Jazz Fest at Maritime Park. Betty Buckley appears in the romantic comedy classic, Hello Dolly and Zac Brown, the Backstreet Boys and George Strait are also in town. Summer evenings are perfect to catch an outdoor movie, at the Esplanade, Columbus Park, Faneuil Hall Marketplace, the Pru's South Garden. Colorful and lively ethnic festivals include the Latino, African, August Moon and the Caribbean Carnival. The Seafood Festival and bi-annual Dine Out Boston are on August's menu, when 130+ Greater Boston restaurants serve prix fixe meals at delicious prices!

Cape Cod
Music is all around you this August on Cape Cod! The annual Citizens Bank Pops by the Sea outdoor concert will be held on the Hyannis Village Green on Sunday, August 11. Enjoy one of the nation's finest and best-loved musical ensembles - the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra! This year's concert will feature a first in the Pops' 34-year history when actor Erich Bergen (of CBS's "Madam Secretary") not only serves as the guest conductor, but also as the guest performer. Order tickets today! Music lovers will also enjoy the beats of the 15th Annual Provincetown Jazz Fest on August 15 at The Crown & Anchor in Provincetown and August 19 at the Cotuit Center for the Arts. The acclaimed festival features renowned jazz musicians from around the world!

Greater Springfield
The Springfield downtown area has received a creative touch from the talented artists of "Fresh Paint Springfield," a program branch of the Commonwealth Mural Collaborative. The 10 murals signify aspects of Springfield's culture and history. The murals pay tribute to Dr. Seuss, basketball and Puerto Rican heritage. Johnny Appleseed 
There's music in the air in August! On the shores of Mirror Lake in Fitchburg's beautiful Coggshall Park, on town common bandstands, in brew barns and on farm stages, musicians gather to delight residents and visitors almost every day of the week - and it's free!. Military bands, rock groups, polka bands, even a tropical steel band - the choices seem endless. Gather the family, grab some lawn chairs or a blanket, and head to the country.

Martha's Vineyard 
August's arts & cultural scene is wide, wonderful and engaging! Meet the Fleet (August 1); Vineyard Sound concerts (thru August 24 except Sundays); Edgartown Architectural and Harbor walking tours (Tues-Sat); Camp Ground Walking Tours (Tues and Thurs, through August 29); MV Book Festival (August 2-4) Sankofa Festival (August 2-3); Ag Fair (August 15-19); Vineyard Artisans Summer Festival (Thurs/Sun thru August 29); All-Island Art Show  (August 5); Grand Illumination (August 14); African American Film Festival (August 5-10); month-long performances at MV Playhouse;and Featherstone Flea & Fine Arts Market Tuesdays 9:30 am to 2 pm (through August 27)!

Mohawk Trail Region
The 8th Annual Motorama event welcomes all things motorized to downtown North Adams on Sunday August 25 (rain date: August 31). Join us as cars, trucks, motorcycles, tractors, snowmobiles, and more line the streets of the downtown, transforming it into a metal wonderland of bright colors, chrome and machinery. This event includes raffles, door prizes, music, food & shopping! All proceeds benefit local charities. Cruise in concert (2 bands) on the 24th at Noel Field complex! MetroWest

The annual Spirit of Hudson Food & Brewfest will be held Saturday, August 10! Experience more than 175 crafted beers, ciders, and malt beverages from 70+ breweries, along with food from some of the area's best restaurants. 4-7 pm at 99 Park Street in Hudson. Then,  buzzing into MetroWest on Saturday, September 7 will be Ashland's annual Dragonfly Festival. This celebration of food, music, and community is held at the Ashland Historical Society, which abuts Mill Pond and the Sudbury River. 1 to 7 pm. Free to the public!
